Ricky Gervais returning to The Simpsons

Comedian Ricky Gervais will return to Springfield for his second appearance on The Simpsons later this year.

The Office and Extras star will join actress Halle Berry on the cartoon in an episode in which Homer and Bart attend the Academy Awards.

The pair will bump into Gervais while out and about in Los Angeles.

The comedian first appeared on the show back in 2006 where he co-wrote an episode called Homer Simpson, This is Your Life in which he lent his voice to a character.

Mad Men's Jon Hamm to guest on The Simpsons

Mad Men’s Jon Hamm has announced he will be making an appearance on the upcoming season of The Simpsons.

The actor who plays Don Draper in the drama series will lend his voice to the cartoon in order to play a FBI agent who is chasing mobster Fat Tony.

The character will be an alter-ego of himself who teams with Homer as an undercover agent in order to collar Fat Tony and his gang.

Executive producer Al Jean said of Hamm’s recording session: "You gave [John Hamm] one note and he immediately did 12 great things with it," adding, "He was really funny. And handsome. He had it all."

Homer Simpson named greatest character from past 20 years

Homer Simpson has been crowned the greatest character created for film and television in the past 20 years.

The cartoon character has edged Harry Potter to win the title in a survey in industry magazine Entertainment Weekly.

Following the pair were Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Heath Ledger’s Joker from the Batman film, Tony Soprano and Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel from Friends.

The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening said the character of Homer was easily relatable to its viewers.

"People can relate to Homer because we're all secretly propelled by desires we can't admit to," he said.

"Homer is launching himself head-first into every single impulsive thought that occurs to him.

"His love of whatever has caught his eye is a joy to witness."
