United States of Tara

US network Showtime has given another season to dark comedy Nurse Jackie but decided to bring comedy-drama United States of Tara to an end.

The Toni Collette-starring series has been axed by the network after running for three seasons.

Collette has picked up several awards, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe,  for her portrayal of a mother suffering from multiple personalities.

However, Nurse Jackie will return for a fourth season next year.

Both series screen here in Canada on The Movie Network and Movie Central.

A pill-popping nurse and a multi-layered suburban mom return on Monday, March 28 as Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada) and Astral’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) present all new seasons of Showtime’s critically acclaimed, dark comedies Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara.

Nurse Jackie (Season 3) premieres at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT, followed by United States of Tara (Season 3) at 10:30 p.m. ET/9:30 p.m. PT.

Nurse Jackie stars Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton, a sharp-tongued, New York City ER nurse who skilfully navigates the rough waters of a crumbling healthcare system, doing everything she can to provide her patients with the best possible care.

A devoted wife, mother and friend on the surface, Jackie is hiding a nasty addiction to pain pills, an illicit affair with the hospital pharmacist, and the fact that she’s married with kids from her co-workers.

Season 2 ended with the ugly truth closing in on Jackie: her lover Eddie threatened to expose their affair to her husband, and her co-workers and husband put the pieces together about her pill-popping ways, finally confronting her about her addiction.

Season 3 picks up right where the previous one left off, and sees Jackie facing an unwanted intervention. The series also stars: Peter Facinelli as Dr. Fitch Cooper; Eve Best as Dr. Eleanor O’Hara; Merritt Wever as Zoey Barkow,; Paul Schulze; and Dominic Fumusa as Kevin Peyton.

Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and created by Diablo Cody, United States of Tara stars Toni Collette as Tara Gregson, a wife and mother who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder which results in the appearance of several eccentric alternate personalities including: the wild and flirty T; 1950s housewife Alice; beer guzzling Vietnam vet Buck, pop psychologist Shoshana; and troublemaking toddler Chicken. In Season 2, just as Tara decided to move on from her past, a sudden neighbourhood incident opened the door to her family’s shocking secrets, while her husband and children explored their own true identities. As Season 3 begins, Tara decides to go back to college, and must deal with her now present mother-in-law, a recluse with a compulsive hoarding problem. Joining the cast for the third season are Eddie Izzard (The Riches) as Tara’s college professor, and Frances Conroy (Golden Globe®-winner for Six Feet Under) as her mother-in-law. The series also stars: John Corbett, Rosemarie DeWitt, Keir Ghilchrist, and Brie Larson.

All new episodes of Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara will be simulcast on The Movie Network and Movie Central’s High Definition channels, and will be available on demand. Episodes of Nurse Jackie will be available on The Movie Network OnLine with Bell TV, Rogers and Videotron and Movie Central Online with Shaw Video On Demand and Bell TV Online following its network premieres.
