In flashbacks, Stefan explains how his rivalry with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) began. Back in the present, Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre, KYLE XY) and Mayor Lockwood (guest star Rob Pralgo, HIGH RISE) take steps to protect the town.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) is hopeful that his plan to get rid of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is working. Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Jenna (Sara Canning) are concerned about Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) relationship with Vicki (Kayla Ewell). At a fundraising car wash, Bonnie (Katerina Graham) is surprised by abilities she didn’t know she possessed, and seeks advice from her grandmother (Jasmine Guy, A DIFFERENT WORLD).

Elena (Nina Dobrev) asks Stefan (Paul Wesley) to escort her to the town’s annual Founder’s Party. Vicki (Kayla Ewell) gets Tyler (Michael Trevino) to ask her to the party, and then accuses him of trying to hide their relationship from his family. At the party, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tells Elena a story about the Salvatore family’s past, leaving Elena with questions that Stefan refuses to answer.

Airing for the first time in its new 7 p.m. ET timeslot, Elena (Nina Dobrev) tries to ignore Bonnie’s (Katerina Graham) warnings about the disturbing vibes she got from Stefan (Paul Wesley). Mr. Tanner (guest star Canadian Benjamin Ayres, SMALLVILLE) reluctantly lets Stefan join the football team. Elena invites Stefan and Bonnie to dinner, hoping that the two will bond, but the evening is disrupted by the unexpected and unwelcome arrival of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Caroline (Candice Accola).

As Mystic Falls prepares for a festival to celebrate the passing of a comet, Vicki (Kayla Ewell) is in the hospital recovering from the attack she can barely remember. Stefan (Paul Wesley) goes to the hospital and tries to use his abilities to make sure Vicki doesn’t remember what really happened, but his attempt is cut short when Vicki’s brother Matt (Zach Roerig) arrives. At a parent/teacher conference, Mr. Tanner (guest star Canadian Benjamin Ayres, SMALLVILLE) makes Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) feel that she is failing as a surrogate parent, especially when it comes to Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). Elena (Nina Dobrev) decides to go to the Salvatore house to talk to Stefan, but finds his charming brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) instead.

Nearly 1.5 million (1.462) Canadians sank their teeth into last night’s premiere of the THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on CTV, quenching the desire of hordes of young viewers hungry for their vampire fix. The series premiere was the #1 program of the night in Calgary and Vancouver in the key A18-49 and A25-54 demos and #2 nationally. Demonstrating its staying power, the premiere grew 13% in its second half with total viewers and 20% with A18-34. Over the course of the premiere, more than 3.5 million viewers got sucked in to some part of the broadcast.

In the U.S. preliminary overnight data reports that 4.8 million viewers tuned in to the premiere on CW, making it the network’s most watched series premiere ever.

An encore of last night’s episode will air on MuchMusic tonight at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET and on CTV Saturday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET and is available now on demand at CTV.ca. In the premiere episode, Elena and Jeremy return to Mystic Falls High School following the death of their parents.
