Heralded as one of William Shakespeare’s greatest plays ever, THE TEMPEST enjoyed an incredible run to sold-out houses at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival last year.
Now viewers can witness the acclaimed performance of legendary Canadian actor Christopher Plummer as Prospero when THE TEMPEST steps from the Stratford stage to the small screen on Monday, April 11 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, exclusively on Bravo!
This two-hour live-to-tape Original Production of William Shakespeare’s culminating masterpiece is directed by Stratford’s Artistic Director and Tony Award® -winner Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, The Who’s Tommy).
“Bravo! is delighted to play host to THE TEMPEST and support the Stratford Shakespeare Festival,” said Charlotte Engel, Production Executive, Documentaries and Alternative Programming, Bravo! “Christopher Plummer’s performance is brilliant and the entire cast is a joy to watch.”
“Christopher Plummer is one of the greatest classical actors of our time, and The Tempest is one of the very greatest of all Shakespeare’s plays: it was my great privilege to be able to bring the two together,” said Des McAnuff, Artistic Director, Stratford Shakespeare Festival. “We know from our patrons’ responses that this production turned many people on to the joys of Shakespeare and classical theatre – including the young people who are so crucial to our future – and I’m delighted that we are now able to expand its audience to all of Canada.”
“The Tempest was an enormous success at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, selling out for most of its run,” said Antoni Cimolino, General Director, Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Every day our box office was hearing from people eager to get tickets to see the show – and we had to disappoint them. Now, thanks to Bravo! and CTV, Canadians everywhere will have an opportunity to see this outstanding film of Des McAnuff’s original stage production – giving them a taste of the theatrical magic the Festival has to offer.”
THE TEMPEST earned rave reviews when it debuted on the prestigious Stratford Festival stage last year:
• “Music fills the air, and magic charms the senses…in Des McAnuff’s frisky and engaging new production…but the real magic – and the most beautiful music – resides in the voice of the great actor Christopher Plummer.” – The New York Times
• “The production that opened Friday night is scrupulously honest to Shakespeare’s text but manages to bring a fresh approach to the work, allowing us to look at it and listen to it like we never have before.” – Toronto Star
• “There are two magicians at work on the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s production of The Tempest. The first is Christopher Plummer, a true wizard with Shakespeare’s words. Prospero’s lines always flow with such natural ease from him, sometimes in what seems like spontaneous spurts, other times as if he’s tapped into some enchanted well of poetry deep within. The second wizard here is Tempest director Des McAnuff, who certainly conjures some of the most technically impressive magic ever seen on the Festival theatre stage.” – The Globe and Mail
THE TEMPEST pits the desire for revenge against the demands of love and asks if man is capable of creating a brave new world. The story focuses on Prospero (Plummer), the banished Duke of Milan. Marooned on a distant island with his daughter Miranda (Trish Lindstrom), Prospero has spent 12 years perfecting his magic arts. Now, with the help of the spirit Ariel (Julyana Soelistyo), he raises a storm at sea, bringing within his grasp the enemies who robbed him of his dukedom.
Plummer was born in Montreal and has become one of the most recognized actors in North America, with two Tony Awards® and two Emmy® Awards topping his list of accomplishments.
