Steve Carell has said in an interview that the next season of The Office will “probably” be his last.

The American actor was on a BBC radio station promoting his latest film Date Night with Tina Fey when he was asked about his future.

“How long does your contract run?” asked the interviewer.

“Contract through next season,” Carell answered.

“And will you stay after that?”

“I don’t think so,” Carell answered.

“That will probably be my last year.”

Carell, who plays bungling boss Michael Scott on the US show, received a Golden Globe in 2006 for his role in the spin-off of the hit Ricky Gervais-created comedy.

US network NBC has not confirmed the news nor announced whether the show would continue without Carell.

British funny-man Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globes for the second time in two years.

Gervais has signed on for hosting duties once again of the 68th Annual Golden Globes, with NBC claiming viewership was up 12% due to the comedian’s performance at the awards show this year.

“As viewers discovered with our last awards telecast, Ricky’s surprising and unpredictable humor is a great fit for the Globes which will continue as a live event across the nation,” said Paul Telegdy, president of alternative at NBC.

“He’s a true force of nature with a wicked sense of humor who always keeps everyone on their toes waiting for the unexpected.”

The Office star will host the ceremony on January 16, 2011.
