Over the Rainbow winner Danielle Wade has given her first performance in the role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz after triumphing on the CBC show.

The 20-year-old from LaSalle, Ontario, was chosen for the role by winning the Andrew Lloyd Webber reality series last year.

The Wizard of Oz opening in Toronto on Sunday and critics gave it mixed reviews, with some criticizing Wade’s performance.

Danielle Wade has taken out the role of Dorothy on CBC’s Over the Rainbow.

The 20-year-old from LaSalle, Ontario, was voted the winner over fellow finalists A.J. Bridel and Stephanie La Rochelle.

“I honestly couldn’t believe it when they called my name,” she said. “I never thought this would happen. This is incredible.”

Legendary Emmy and Tony Award winning comedian, Andrea Martin, will appear as a special guest on CBC’s Over the Rainbow this week. Viewers can see the eight remaining Dorothys perform live on Sunday, September 30 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT), followed by Monday night’s results show on October 1 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT).

Martin will share her unique brand of wit and her experience in musical comedy as she works with the contestants to stage their group performance of the Broadway classic, “Anything You Can Do,” from Annie Get Your Gun. Each contestant will be vying for the chance to play Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, opening this December at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, Toronto, ON. CBC has announced the judges for the upcoming series Over the Rainbow.

Experienced UK talent series judge Arlene Phillips and musical theatre performers Thom Allison and Louise Pitre will make up the panel who will help choose the next Dorothy for a Toronto production of The Wizard of Oz.

Phillips has served on the judging panels of Strictly Come Dancing, So You Think You Can Dance, DanceX and Strictly Dance Fever in the past.

Winnipeg-born Allison is currently featuring in Ragtime at the Shaw festival and has just completed a run in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. Continue reading »

20-year-old Danielle is from LaSalle, Ontario and is currently attending a fine arts program at the University of Windsor.

Danielle credits everything she knows about performing to Kathy Rogers, her singing teacher.

When she was seven, she saw The Lion King, and says she was completely mesmerized by the music and costumes. The first big role she had was playing Sandy in Grease, and remembers feeling really at home on stage. Her role model is Sutton Foster, who she says exudes grace and poise. Continue reading »

17-year-old Kelsey Verzotti calls Calgary, Alberta home, and plans on graduating high school next year.

The very first stage production she ever saw was The Wizard of Oz when she was four, and she calls Kristen Chenoweth her biggest role model.
