own-logo2012The Oprah Winfrey Network Canada has been warned by the Canadian broadcasting regulator that the channel is not airing enough educational material.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission stated that Corus, who own the rights to OWN, failed to adhere to the term of the license granted to the channel, known as Canadian Learning Television (CLT).

The license mandate states that the channel must “provide formal and informal educational programming and learning opportunities that generally focus on adult education and that come from a full spectrum of basic, credit-based, skills-related and life-enhancing programs.” Continue reading »

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network (Canada) announced today another stop for Oprah’s Lifeclass Tour for the first ever broadcast of the show in Canada.

Oprah Winfrey brings her popular series to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto for a live show to air Monday, April 16 (8 p.m.- 10 p.m. ET) on OWN.

Winfrey takes the stage in Canada to connect with viewers in person and online about the lessons that guide her life. She will be joined on stage alongside hand-picked experts including life and business catalyst Tony Robbins, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, Bishop T.D. Jakes and inspirational author Iyanla Vanzant.

Oprah’s Lifeclass Tour begins with the premiere episode broadcast live from the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis on Monday, March 26 (8 – 10 p.m. ET), with five additional consecutive new episodes airing every Monday night throughout April.

Oprah’s Lifeclass will again engage fans worldwide online with live streaming at Oprah.com and feature a digital classroom (www.oprah.com/lifeclass) with all-new course work to accompany episode themes.

During its inaugural five week run in October 2011, Oprah’s Lifeclass was a true multi-platform experience. Over 4.1 million students from around the world engaged with Oprah online at Oprah.com to view live webcasts of the series and join the Lifeclass digital classroom to participate in the companion course work.

Oprah’s Lifeclass content received nearly 11 million page views and 1.6 million unique visitors on Oprah.com. Users from over 200 countries viewed the ‘Oprah’s Lifeclass’ webcasts on Facebook and Oprah.com.

Our America with Lisa Ling will chronicle veterans who battle post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a special episode titled Invisible Wounds of War premiering Sunday, November 6 at 10 p.m. , day-and-date with OWN U.S.

In the episode, Ling goes inside the National Veterans Crisis Line in upstate New York where she listens in on responders talking to veterans in their darkest hours. Then, high in the mountains of New Mexico in a town called Angel Fire, Ling attends an innovative program developed to help veterans and their spouses break free from the emotional distress that has taken over their lives.  During the course of the week-long retreat, service men and women will learn new tools to battle the anxiety, darkness and paranoia they wrestle with every day. Many of these veterans have tried to cure their PTSD with Western medicine, but during this time at Angel Fire, Ling will witness veterans and their loved ones as they delve deep into themselves through a practice that is age-old to America, but revolutionary for these times.

ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT – DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE

Ten years in the making, One Lucky Elephant is a documentary that follows circus producer David Balding as he struggles to find a nurturing permanent home for Flora, the orphaned baby African elephant he lovingly raised as a “daughter” and made the star of his circus. As Flora approaches adulthood, David realizes that she is no longer happy performing and needs to be with other elephants. The road to Floras retirement, however, is a difficult and emotional journey that tests their bond in unexpected ways. The film is both a touching account of a man’s incredible love for a wild animal and a poignant exploration of the critical issues about the future of elephants in captivity and how these issues have affected the life of one very lucky elephant. OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network (Canada) announced today its Canadian primetime programming slate for original series premiering in October, anchored by the previously announced The Rosie Show and Oprah’s Lifeclass on weeknights.

New primetime series beginning October 16 and 17 include Don’t Tell The Bride, Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s and Visionaries: Inside The Creative Mind, along with all-new second seasons of the returning favorites Ask Oprah’s All Stars and Our America With Lisa Ling.

The Rosie Show (7 p.m. ET), the anticipated new daily talk show from Rosie O’Donnell, and Oprah’s Lifeclass (8 p.m. ET), inspired by The Oprah Winfrey Show with all-new insights, life lessons and personal revelations from Oprah, both premiere Monday, October 10 and air Monday through Friday.

The new OWN docu-series, Confronting, takes viewers inside the mediation process as a victim and offender come together, face to face, for the most important conversation of their lives.  Each one-hour episode follows an emotional story that begins with a crime. It brings together victim and offender, documenting their powerful, painful and transformative journey, as they both try to come to terms with the terrible event that links them. The mediation process culminates in a no-holds-barred in-person meeting in prison, and during the emotional confrontation, the offender learns of the pain and suffering caused by his misdeeds and is offered the opportunity to apologize and ask for redemption. Celebrity chef Christine Cushing transforms a new group of culinary catastrophes into kitchen-savvy cooks in Season 3 of Fearless in the Kitchen. In each half-hour episode, viewers are introduced to a new kitchen-challenged participant who share their kitchen horror stories with Christine in hopes that she will help them become fearless in their own kitchen. Christine takes these chefs on various culinary adventures, helping them cook several meals – including a surprise final meal for family and friends. Adventures this season include corralling Texas Longhorn cattle in Tillsonburg, Ontario and fly fishing for wild Trout in Escarpment Hills Lake, near Milton, Ontario. This October, Corus Entertainment’s OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network (Canada) presents a new primetime 90-minute special featuring an intimate look at Canadian musical icon Celine Dion set to premiere Sunday, October 2 at 9 p.m. Celine: 3 Boys and a New Show takes viewers behind-the-scenes as Celine creates her Las Vegas show “Celine” and balances being an international superstar and her responsibilities to her family.

This May, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network (Canada) presents the Canadian premiere of the highly anticipated Chaz Bono documentary Becoming Chaz on May 15. Becoming Chaz will be the first film to air as part of the OWN Documentary Film Club, which was created to spotlight cinematic documentaries that inspire, entertain and engage audiences.

Becoming Chaz made its world premiere to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival 2011 and will premiere on OWN Sunday, May 15 at 7 p.m. The film follows Chaz Bono’s emotional and physical transition from a woman to a man, a journey of identity and self-discovery. Turlington puts audiences in the shoes of a young Maasai mother who has gone into labour and must walk five miles to the nearest clinic, a pregnant woman in the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh too ashamed to seek care, a pregnant obstetrician helping women who have no choice but to undergo illegal and dangerous abortions in Guatemala, and a midwife in central Florida who serves pregnant women who are denied prenatal care because they are uninsured. Through emotional and sometimes shocking personal stories, The Truth of My Sex looks at the condition where babies are born with genitalia that are neither exclusively male or female. Through their stories the film looks at how the condition presents itself, the prescribed medical treatment and the stigma of being born ‘intersex.’ This compelling documentary premieres Sunday, May 29 at 7 p.m. ET.

Beginning Friday, January 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on W Network, viewers will be able to follow Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star day-and-date with the U.S., along with additional OWN programming. OWN will launch in the U.S. on January 1, 2011.

Corus Entertainment (TSX:CJR.B) and OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network announced that they have finalized a licensing agreement that will enable Corus to add OWN to its portfolio of Canadian specialty services.  OWN is set to launch in Canada in early 2011 following the U.S. premiere January 1, 2011.

OWN is a perfect addition to our Women’s portfolio of specialty channels, and Corus is proud to launch this highly-anticipated brand in Canada,” said Doug Murphy, President, Corus Television. “With a wide spectrum of great programming offerings and the addition of Oprah’s Next Chapter later next year, OWN is going to be a must-have channel on the dial for Canadian audiences.”

OWN will target adults 18 – 54 with a core of women 25 – 54 and explore issues that matter, from health and wellness, home and relationships to stories of strength and transformation. With over 1200 hours of original and acquired programming, series will include Rosie O’Donnell’s return to daytime television with The Rosie O’Donnell Show,   Behind the Scenes: The Oprah Show Final Season, Oprah Presents: Master Class, In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman, The Miracle Detectives, and Oprah’s Next Chapter.

OWN will be available in Canada based on a licence agreement with OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.
