MTV NEWS Presents IMPACT: INSIDE THE PROTEST, hosted by reporter Johnny Hockin, captured MTV the #1 network position amongst all Canadian & US non-sport specialty networks from 8-9 p.m. ET this past Friday for P12-34, A18-34 and A18-491.

Impact: Inside the Protest was the second most watched non-sport program of the day for P12-34, 18-34, and A18-49 on all Canadian commercial & US specialty networks2.  Total audience for the MTV NEWS special was 176,000 P2+1.

IMPACT: INSIDE THE PROTEST is the second installment of the MTV NEWS Presents IMPACT series – powerful newsworthy specials that address important issues relevant to the MTV audience. The series aims to spark discussion and debate amongst viewers.

In this episode, MTV NEWS is embedded with activist Emily Hunter during the G20 protests in Toronto. Gritty frontline accounts of the destructive rampage of anarchists through Canada’s largest city and the intense showdown between riot police and protestors is interspersed with a spirited panel discussion recounting the events.

Emily Hunter is a second generation environmental activist. Her father, Bob Hunter, co-founded Greenpeace, led the first on-sea anti-whaling campaign and worked as an environmental journalist until his death in 2005.

MTV NEWS presents IMPACT, a new series of specials that tackle urgent and newsworthy problems in a powerful and direct style. IMPACT: EMILY HUNTER INVESTIGATES THE ALBERTA TAR SANDS is the first installment of the series, premiering Thursday, December 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET. In this half-hour special, the MTV cameras follow environmental activist Emily Hunter’s personal journey to the tar sands in Alberta.

It’s the size of the state of Florida and generates a billion dollars in cash for Alberta. Workers come from across the country to make six figures and live the life, but what’s really going on in the Alberta tar sands? Watch Emily confront the biggest threat to climate change in Canada while wrestling with her own conflict; pursuing journalism versus activism. Emily examines the tar sands social and environmental pros and cons and visits with one of the tar sands most impacted communities, Fort Chipewyan.

Emily Hunter is second generation environmental activist. Her father, Bob Hunter, co-founded Greenpeace, led the first on-sea anti-whaling campaign and worked as an environmental journalist till his death in 2005. Emily is carrying on the family legacy, having sailed with radical conservation group Sea Shepherd and campaigning for animal and environmental issues around the world.

Emily is currently in Copenhagen for the climate change summit. MTV NEWS is documenting her experience through blogs and daily reports.
