Take to the seas on the voyage of a lifetime when Discovery Channel’s MIGHTY SHIPS returns with six all-new episodes featuring that unique combination of “high stakes, high seas, high drama” that loyal audiences around the world have come to expect from this original Canadian-made series.

Premiering Wednesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT, Season 5 starts with the hottest ticket on the high seas aboard one of the largest and most popular cruise ships in the world – the magnificent Norwegian Epic…but be warned, this is NOT your (grand) parent’s cruise ship anymore!

Highlights from the fifth season of MIGHTY SHIPS include:

MIGHTY SHIPS: “Norwegian Epic”

Wednesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET/ 10 p.m. PT

With a 10,000 square meter spa, a 250-meter long waterslide and a pool deck the size of a city block, Norwegian Epic is the best party on the high seas! With name-brand entertainment like the Blue Man Group and Cirque Dreams, more than 20 bars and restaurants, and hot pool decks that transform into even hotter nightclubs, Norwegian Epic is a billion-dollar showboat like you’ve never seen! Don’t miss a minute as MIGHTY SHIPS starts its fifth season off in style, capturing the ship’s energetic crew and clientele as they party their way through a weeklong Caribbean holiday on one of the largest cruise ships afloat. But, big ships can have big problems – and Norwegian Epic is no exception. Watch as it deals with crosswinds in a narrow harbour and getting its 4,000 passengers back on board safe and sound after a daylong shore visit – how will the crew pull it off?

MIGHTY SHIPS: “North Star”

Wednesday, July 27 at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT

North Star is one of the only links between Alaska and the continental United States. This massive cargo vessel has spent the winter on the Tacoma-to-Anchorage route, delivering everything from food to building supplies and even army tanks. North Star must deliver within a 72-hour window and the team that loads her has to be even speedier to make deadline. MIGHTY SHIPS captures every moment of this voyage that is anything but routine – with waves as a high as a 10-story building; menacing, hurricane-force winds that can blow crewmembers overboard; and an engine cooler leak that forces North Star to ram through the stubborn Alaskan icepack with just three of her four diesel engines. It’s a journey through sub-zero darkness and unforgiving waters.

Also this season on MIGHTY SHIPS, sail to the bottom of the world (and to the white continent itself, Antarctica) on “Le Boreal,” a vessel as nimble as a yacht with the luxurious appointments and service of a cruise ship (August 10); scope out one of the world’s biggest oil-producing vessels on “FPSO Maersk Peregrino,” (August 17); explore the most powerful, highest-rated ice-breaking bulk carrier in the world on “Umiak I” (August 24); and on the most dramatic season finale yet, get an exclusive tour of the U.S. Navy’s newest ship, “USS Gravely,” a guided missile destroyer, as she prepares for battle on the high seas (August 31).

All Aboard! Mighty Ships Reveals the Secret Mechanics Behind the World’s Most Sophisticated Vessels Beginning July 22

Leaving 24-hour buffets, deck-side cocktail parties and peppy cruise activity directors to “tamer” ships, Discovery Channel climbs aboard to offer an exclusive look at some of the coolest working vessels in the world with the premiere of its new original Canadian series, Mighty Ships.

Premiering Tues., July 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel (and then following on Discovery HD on Sun., July 27 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT), each episode of the six-part series provides unprecedented access to everything above and below deck, from the mechanics of modern sea-going to the human dramas facing seafarers. Whether it’s cargo container ships, ice-breakers or livestock carriers, Mighty Ships is as much about what happens inside the ship as the journey each vessel makes.

Building on the success of Discovery Channel’s Canadian special Mighty Ships: Queen Mary 2, this new original series provides the most exclusive access to some of the world’s most extraordinary working ships.

Shot entirely in High Definition, Mighty Ships features 5.1 surround sound and stunning visuals from aboard these vessels, as it explores the mechanics of the actual ships and the intricate relationships of those aboard.

Meet the crew and staff who navigate these ships and find out what makes their jobs so unique – and sometimes – very challenging.
