The actor who played the father on iconic TV series Happy Days has died aged 83.
Tom Bosley, who portrayed the understanding Howard Cunningham on the series in the 1970’s, passed away in Palm Springs due to heart failure. He had also been battling lung cancer.
Bosley’s role on Happy Days, which also featured Henry Winkler as Fonzi, has been ranked ninth on the TV Guide’s list of Greatest TV Dads of All Time.
The actor originally turned the role down, as he recalls in a 1986 interview: “I changed my mind because of a scene between Howard Cunningham and Richie. The father/son situation was written so movingly, I fell in love with the project.”
Following Happy Days, Bosley went on to feature in Murder, She Wrote as Sheriff Amos Tucker before launching his own series The Father Dowling Mysteries in 1989.
The actor also had a colourful career on the stage in several Broadway shows including Fiorello! where he won a Tony Award.
