“Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at the Oscars. He agreed (true),” Gervais wrote on Twitter, in reference to Crystal’s recent appointment as Oscars host.

Gervais’s last two stints as host of the awards were met with a mixed reception from both viewers and critics, some of whom believed he went too far in his ridicule of the likes of Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.

Ricky Gervais took aim at several big-name actors and actresses during the Golden Globe Awards yesterday, with many saying he went too far.

The comedian lined up the likes of Robert Downey Jr. Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp and Scarlett Johansson during his performance and received a mixed reception from the crowd.

He was particularly scathing of the Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie film The Tourist as well as Charlie Sheen’s recent hotel room indiscretions.

Among other jokes, he referred to Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s dad” and to Robert Downey Jr.’s movies Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Two Guys and a Girl as “porn films”.

Many of those in attendance disagreed with Gervais’ sense of humour but he did have a fan in award-winner Al Pacino, who praised the Brit for his performance.

“He’s a comic, so he’s going to go for it. He’s letting it go. The only thing he can really get to is his own wit,” Pacino said afterwards.

“You don’t know what they’re going to say! I think it’s worth it.”
