Canwest and the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television are proud to announce Ron James as the Host of the 24th Annual Gemini Awards.

Honouring the year’s highest achievements in Canadian television, the Awards will be broadcast on Saturday, November 14 – 9pm ET/PT on Global and Showcase direct from the grounds of the historic BMO Centre, Stampede Corral in the beautiful city of Calgary, Alberta.

“We’re on the road again with the Geminis, heading west to the bustling metropolis of Calgary. Coupled with the unique comedic talents of Ron James, this year’s Gala broadcast will be a reflection of the city’s unbridled energy and enthusiasm,” said Christine Shipton SVP, Drama and Factual Content, Canwest Broadcasting. “Across the board, from the nominees to the fans, we can all look forward to an amazing night of entertainment and celebration.”

Hailed by critics nationwide, award-winning comedian, Ron James (“The Ron James Show”), has consistently sold out theatres across the country with his marathon, side-splitting, kinetically charged performances. With a comedian’s eye for satire and a poet’s ear for language, Ron cuts a wide swath through contemporary culture with a razor sharp wit and machine-gun delivery, making him a stand-out among stand-up performers.

Public tickets are now available for the 2009 Gemini Awards Gala ceremony. Fans can visit www.ticketmaster.ca to purchase general admission tickets.

“We are thrilled to bring the Awards show to Calgary and to invite the public to participate in a night that promises to be both inspiring and entertaining,” said Sara Morton, CEO, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. “Ron James will bring an exciting electricity to the awards show, as will this year’s nominees and presenters – it will be a most fitting celebration of the best in Canadian television.”

Launched by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television in 1986, The Gemini Awards honour outstanding achievements in the Canadian English-language television industry. The Gemini Awards bring together over 2,500 of Canada’s most gifted craftspeople, producers and decision-makers over several evenings of special events.

A list of presenters at this year’s Gemini Awards will be announced in the weeks to come. For a complete list of nominations, please visit www.geminiawards.ca.

Global Television is heading into the second half of 2009 with impressive on-air and online growth, a review of television ratings and online data from the first six months of the year has revealed.

While other TV networks focus on rebuilding their schedules after a year of slumping ratings, Global finished the season with continued strength. The network’s national primetime audience grew 3% this spring1, bolstered by substantial gains where it matters most: in the country’s two largest television markets and among the core television demographic of Adults 18-49. In Toronto, Global’s primetime audience grew 6%; in Vancouver, the growth was an impressive 11%. Global’s ratings success was fueled by its strong roster of primetime hits including one of Canada’s top programs, House – up another 12% in Toronto this spring; The Simpsons – up 20%; NCIS – up 22%; and Family Guy – up 10%2. All four shows are returning to Global’s primetime schedule this fall.

Global also solidified its long-standing lead over Canada’s secondary networks. This spring, Global’s audiences were almost double those of the CBC, ahead 98% in Toronto and 71% in Vancouver. Global also increased its dominance over Citytv, with audiences 105% larger in Toronto and a staggering 240% larger in Vancouver2.

Global also hit a new digital milestone this spring with the re-designed GlobalTV.com. The new site – now streaming episodes of the majority of the network’s primetime programs, skyrocketed ahead of all other Canadian broadcasters to become Canada’s #1 Website for Broadcast Video.

Key highlights for GlobalTV.com include:
· The Most Overall Video Plays of any Canadian broadcaster, with 6.4 million video streams, up 895%.
· The Most Engaged Video Viewers with 80 minutes a month of video watched per viewer, up 244%. This is far ahead of second place CBC.ca (57 minutes) and more than four times the engagement of CTV.ca (19 minutes).
· The Most Video per Viewer with 22 videos per month, up 238%.
· GlobalTV.com is also the Fastest Growing Site for Video with triple digit increases for all key video metrics3.

Barbara Williams, Executive Vice President, Content, Canwest Broadcasting officially unveiled the Fall 2009 Primetime Schedule for Global Television at Toronto’s historic Distillery District earlier this morning.

“Viewers are in for a real treat,” said Williams. “The strength of our returning hits provides a solid anchor for every night of the week. Add to this the cream of the crop from the new season, and we’ve got a powerful combination that will be hard to top.”

Global’s fall line-up includes the most buzz-worthy show of the season GLEE. From creator Ryan Murphy (“Nip/Tuck”) comes a musical-comedy about a vibrant group of geeky misfits and the resurgence of the school’s unpopular glee club. Also new to the schedule is the animated and loveable Cleveland Brown starring in his very own Family Guy spin-off series, THE CLEVELAND SHOW.

The superb Julianna Margulies (“ER”) returns to the small screen in THE GOOD WIFE, as a scorned politician’s wife who must persevere beyond a very public scandal in her hometown of Chicago. Meanwhile on the west coast, hip-hop recording artist, LL Cool J (“Charlie’s Angels”) and Chris O’Donnell (“Scent of a Woman”) join forces to lead a team of undercover surveillance investigators in NCIS: LOS ANGELES. Last, but certainly not least, the sexy, wild drama of MELROSE PLACE is back. Fans will revisit the trendy stomping grounds of the popular 1990’s series with some familiar faces such as Laura Leighton and Thomas Calabro, as well as some new tenants including Ashlee Simpson-Wentz (“Seventh Heaven”) and Canadian Jessica Lucas (“Cloverfield”).

Returning primetime hits include HOUSE, LIE TO ME, NCIS, BONES, THE OFFICE, SURVIVOR, HEROES, BROTHERS & SISTERS, FAMILY GUY and the 21st season of the iconic animated series, THE SIMPSONS.

GlobalTV.com, the country’s fastest growing broadcast site** will provide full access to an amazing roster of returning hits with two all-new additions, Survivor and NCIS, plus many of the latest acquisitions including The Good Wife and Melrose Place.
