Discovery HD Gives New Meaning to the Term “Culture Clash” When Fight Quest Premieres April 8
Some guys like to fight – and others like to watch. Premiering Tues., April 8 at 10 p.m. ET/PT – exclusively Discovery HD – Fight Quest offers a blend of cultural immersion and good old-fashioned smackdown. From locations including the Philippines, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico City, Thailand, Israel, Brazil and India, hosts Jimmy Smith and Doug Anderson experience a variety of fight types – kickboxing, boxing and karate, just to name a few – culminating with Smith or Anderson facing off against a local expert in no-holds-barred combat. In the end, only the best will win.
Hosts are L.A.–based mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Jimmy Smith and New Jersey native and Iraqi War veteran Doug Anderson. Smith is one of mixed martial arts’ rising cage-fighting stars. In the cage, Smith is known as a lightning-fast grappler who can destroy opponents in under three minutes. During Anderson’s three years of Army service in Iraq, he was part of the crucial Rapid Deployment Force. During his time in the Army Anderson became interested in martial arts, now practicing jujitsu and traditional and Muay Thai kickboxing.

Fight Quest: “Philippines – Kali”
In this episode, Smith and Anderson head to Manila to study the weapons-based Filipino art of Kali – one of the deadliest, most ancient fighting systems on Earth. Both men will undergo an intense cultural and physical experience that will test their stamina, culminating in a brutal, no-holds-barred showdown against the hardest Kali fighters the country has to offer.

Fight Quest: “China – Wishu and Sanda”
Smith and Anderson head to China’s legendary Songshan Mountains to learn the most famous of all martial arts: Kung Fu. They train with two 31st generation Shaolin “fighting monks” and then must face two of their toughest disciples in a fierce Chinese kickboxing challenge.

Fight Quest: “Japan – Kyokushin Karate”
The most popular and extreme version of karate, Kyokushin is an aggressive, full contact style of karate-do founded by Masutatsu Oyama in 1964. Japanese for “the society for the ultimate truth,” it’s a practical method of self defense, deeply rooted in the philosophies of self-improvement and discipline. Anderson and Smith venture to Tokyo to train under President of the International Kyokushin Organization.

Fight Quest: “Korea – Hapkido”
Hapkido is Korea’s gift to the world of marshal arts and in this episode, Smith and Anderson learn the ins and outs of this deadly defensive art. After learning spinning kicks, flying kicks and other Hapkido tricks, they head into a full-contact Hapkido battle.

Fight Quest: “France – Savate”
Savate – aalso known as boxe française or French kickboxing – is a French martial art which uses both the hands and feet as weapons and contains elements of western boxing, grappling and graceful kicking techniques. The form is an amalgam of French street fighting techniques from the beginning of the 19th century. Anderson and Smith travel to Marseilles, Paris and Cassis to train at a combat level with some of Savate’s most experience masters.
