ESPN3DESPN may well have delivered the fatal blow to 3D TV by confirming they are dropping their 3D channel by the end of the year in the US.

The sports broadcaster is shifting its focus to the development of 4K (Ultra HD) after citing high costs and low demand as determining factors in the decision to cut 3D.

ESPN said in a statement: “We continue to experiment with things like Ultra High Definition television production tools to produce our current ESPN family of HD channels.

“Nobody knows more about sports in 3D than ESPN, and we will be ready to provide the service to fans if or when 3D does take off.”
