Canwest is now Shaw Media

The Canadian Media landscape has changed, yet again.

On October 22, the CRTC gave Shaw approval for Shaw to take over controlling interest in the now defunct Canwest Global brand. The deal, said to be worth over $2-Billion Canadian, will see Shaw taking over interest of Canwest’s conventional tv channels and 19 speciality. Global Television, Food Network, TVtropolis and HGTV Canada will all now be under the control of the newly named “Shaw Media”.

This deal had been in the works for over a year but just got approval for the go ahead. No word on what changes could come to these networks but it could bring more money into the networks that would give a boost to home-grown productions. Or more money would be available to buy American shows for broadcast north of the border.

This isn’t the first time a large purchase like this has happened in Canada. A couple of months ago Bell Canada put the plans in motion to purchase CTV 100% including it’s Broadcast and Online properties. The deal is going under CRTC approval but it should be a done deal in 2011.

Canwest Broadcasting announced today the launch of a newly branded, wholly owned digital specialty channel: Twist TV. Set to begin November 1, Twist TV will be available in over 2 million homes nationwide.

Twist TV is all about real life with a twist; capturing the experiences of everyday people facing extraordinary situations.  The channel’s diverse cast of characters and their colourful stories – from unique personal challenges, to difficult family issues, to unusual medical circumstances – are always relatable and often outrageous.  With a lineup of programming that includes tales of out of control kids, pageant moms and life changing health situations, Twist TV will deliver on the channel’s memorable tagline: “Life throws curves”.

Catering to adults 25-54, with a female skew, the channel will offer exclusive access to a variety of entertaining, reliable and practical show titles including:  Raising Sextuplets, Dad Camp, Little Miss Perfect  and 8 Boys and Wanting a Girl as well as the latest seasons of international hit series Nanny 911 and Wife Swap.

“Canwest’s lifestyle channels are the most popular in Canada. Food Network and HGTV are the top two favourite channels for Canadian women and we are confident that Twist TV will quickly become another audience favourite,” said Karen Gelbart, Senior Vice President, Lifestyle Content, Canwest Broadcasting. “We look forward to introducing this new brand and exciting programming mix to viewers in November.”

The launch of Twist TV follows Canwest subsidiary CW Media’s purchase in 2009 of the shares of Discovery Health Channel Canada previously held by Discovery Communications Inc.

On November 1, 2010, Twist TV will become available in over 2 million homes through Rogers (as part of their digital VIP package), Shaw, Cogeco, Bell TV, Shaw Direct and Videotron amongst other carriers.

Hot on the heels of Rookie Blue’s record-breaking launch and upcoming premiere of Haven, a partnership with SyFy, Canwest confirms an impressive roster of additional Canadian series for Global and Showcase.

Canwest is producing seven original one-hour dramas, four half-hour comedies and three back-door pilots, set to premiere throughout the 2010/11 broadcast season.

Canadian actors are being urged to protest the recent buying spree by Canadian networks of American shows.

ACTRA Toronto, the local branch of Canada’s actors union, is calling for Canadian talent to join forces outside the Hazelton Hotel in Yorkville on Tuesday when the Canadian networks pitch their American buys to domestic advertisers.

The rally’s aim is to urge Canadian networks to buy Canadian and not rely on content from South of the border.

Local actors Eric Peterson, Gordon Pinsent, Leah Pinsent and Colin Mochrie will be present at the rally which will aim to get their message through to the likes of Canwest Global and Rogers Media.

The call for support comes after ACTRA national president Ferne Downey blasted local broadcasters for stocking up on new US shows while Canadian efforts are sidelined.

“They’ve been packing their schedules tight with U.S. programming and ready-to-go promotion packages while enjoying the benefit of protection from foreign competition. Let’s hope they surprise us with lots of Canadian programs at their upfronts,” Downey said.

This Spring on Showcase viewers can indulge in a lineup of powerhouse network premieres, exclusive series and highly-anticipated returns. The schedule kicks off on March 29, with a gang of juvenile delinquents in the Showcase exclusive British series Misfits, followed by an unlawful society in British drama Survivors. For the first time ever the Showtime smash-hit series Californication makes its way onto off-pay television and lands on Showcase. Finally, viewers can hang-up their inhibitions for the tantalizing second season of Showtime series Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

The first season of the Golden Globe® and Emmy® award-winning series, Californication comes to Showcase. The acclaimed dramatic comedy stars David Duchovny as Hank Moody, a novelist who struggles to help raise his 13-year-old daughter, while pining for his ex-girlfriend Karen (Natascha McElhone), all while trying to re-launch his writing career in LA. His obsession with honesty, self-destructive behaviour and women are taking Hank on a rollercoaster ride he can’t seem to get off. Californication airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT beginning April 13.
Everyone’s favourite call girl returns to Showcase with a second season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Belle’s (Billie Piper) life is further complicated by a bubbly but clingy young call-girl-in-training named Bambi (Ashley Madekwe) who she takes under her wing. While her best friend Ben (Iddo Goldberg), the only person who knows about her secret life, settles into domestic bliss, Belle throws herself into her work. When she meets Alex (Callum Blue), a handsome doctor who she mistakes for a client in a hotel bar, Belle becomes conflicted with the most difficult question of all – can she keep having sex for money while falling in love? Secret Diary of a Call Girl airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT beginning April 14.
The BBC breakout hit series Misfits adds further drama to the new schedule. Kelly, Nathan, Curtis, Alisha and Simon have each committed a crime. Needless to say, when they find themselves working together on community service, it doesn’t take long for the sparks to fly. When a freak electrical storm hits the town, strange things begin to happen to them, way beyond their control. They have no idea they’ve turned into superheroes, each with a power that reveals their deepest, darkest insecurities. Misfits airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT beginning March 29.

Also from BBC comes the first season of science fiction drama Survivors that portrays the world stripped of all the conveniences of a modern society – no law, no shops, no communications, no transport, no electricity and no clean water. This is the apocalyptic scenario facing the heroes at the centre of this chilling drama series. Set in the present day, Survivors focuses on the world in the aftermath of a deadly virus as the lonely few who remain struggle to start over in a devastated world. Survivors airs Wednesdays at 11 p.m. ET/PT beginning March 29.
