The Top 9 perform live on the Idol stage.

Tuesday, July 22
8 p.m.

It’s elimination night, and one singer will be sent home.

Last week the Top 24 gave a showcase that was so good that the producers have decided to share it with us.

Tonight’s elimination show is going to be a celebration of music.

Lindsay Robins, Shaun Francisco, Martin Kerr & Paul Clifford sing Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle: 20 Greatest Hits - Have You Ever Seen the Rain? Have You Ever Seen The Rain?

Lindsay Barr and Adam Castelli sing Wilson Pickett - The Essentials: Wilson Pickett - In the Midnight Hour In the Midnight Hour.

Mookie Morris, Earl Stevenson, Mark Day & Jessica Sheppard perform The Hit Crew - Rock & Roll Party Music - Old Time Rock and Roll Old Time Rock and Roll

Jesse Cottam, Katelyn Dawn, Amberly Thiessen and Mitch MacDonald perform Coldplay - Parachutes - Yellow Yellow.

Gary Morissette, Omar Lunan and Drew Wright perform Marvin Gaye - Every Great Motown Hit of Marvin Gaye - I Heard It through the Grapevine I Heard It Through The Grapevine.

Tetiana Ostapowych, Oliver Pigott and Sebastian Pigott perform Seal - Seal: Best 1991-2004 - Fly Like an Eagle Fly Like an Eagle.

Theo Tams, Lisa Bell, Katherine St-Laurent and Marie-Pierre Bellerose perform John Lennon - Imagine (Remastered) - Imagine Imagine.

Heading home tonight in a fairly painless and not drawn out elimination sees Tetiana Ostapowych, Lindsay Barr, Lindsay Robins and Shaun Francisco being told they’re the first ones being cut.

Last night was an average start to the countdown to the Top 10 of Canadian Idol 2008. Tonight, the final 12 of the Top 24 get their chance to take to the stage and impress us for their vote.

It was a bit of a retro night last night. How will everyone go tonight? Let’s recap what happened.

Jesse Cottam
Billy Idol - Billy Idol: Greatest Hits - Rebel Yell Rebel Yell

I thought that was a pretty energetic start to the show. It was a fun performance despite Zack thinking it was the wrong song. I’d definitely say it was a vote winner.

Mark Day
Heart - Heart: Greatest Hits - 1985-1995 - Alone Alone

Mark Day has to be the most unlikely of Idols but there really were some cool things in that performance. He’s got potential to really grow but I’m not sure he’s the 2008 Canadian Idol.

Jessica Sheppard
Oleta Adams - Circle of One - Get Here Get Here

It was a little boring for me. She’s got a good voice but it was just a very safe song choice for me and didn’t really show anything to convince me she’s Top 10 material.

Shaun Francisco
Coldplay - Parachutes - Yellow Yellow

Boring. Imitation. Not Original. Next.

Lindsay Robins
Tina Turner - Tina Turner: The Collected Recordings - River Deep, Mountain High River Deep, Mountain High

Wow! The first performance that has really stood out. Lindsay just rocked that stage and shows how seasoned she is as a performed.

Omar Lunan
Sting - ...All This Time - Every Breath You Take Every Breath You Take

I quite liked this song on Omar. However, as much as I liked his phrasing, I was sometimes left wondering if it sounded a little too affected and that perhaps it could have been a little better if parts of it were closer to the original melody. It was verging on over-trilling a Mariah Carey song.

Marie-Pierre Bellerose
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black - You Know I'm No Good I’m No Good

The song was perfect for Marie-Pierre. It was No Good!

Sebastian Pigott
Amanda Marshall - Amanda Marshall - Dark Horse Dark Horse

I think this competition is going to be hard for Sebastian to be standing in his brothers shadow. He’s a better performer than he is a singer.

Theo Tams
OneRepublic - Dreaming Out Loud - Apologize Apologize

I quite liked the arrangement that Theo had put on that song. Playing the piano, Theo looked like a real star.

Amberly Thiessen
Norah Jones - Feels Like Home - What Am I to You What Am I to You

That was a very pleasant performance from a very pleasant performer. Great song choice and vulnerability but it will be interesting to see where she takes things as the weeks progress.

Adam Castelli
Ray Charles - Ray Charles - Mess Around Mess Around

Nice to have some Ray Charles on the show tonight and nice to see some cool coming to the stage with a pretty lively performance.

Katelyn Dawn
Jeff Buckley - Grace - Hallelujah Hallelujah

I really like this. It’s very reminiscent of Leah Nash from Sixpence None the Richer.

Don’t Forget to Vote!

This year there’s a Top 24 instead of the standard Top 22. Tonight, 12 of them will perform. Tomorrow, the other 12. And then on Wednesday, we’re losing 4 of them?

As you’d expect, the idols are getting talked up as being the most talented musically. It’s going to be interesting to see who can live up to those expectations though.

Here’s who sung what:

Lindsay Barr
Elvis Presley - The Essential Elvis Presley (Remastered) - Burning Love

I found Lindsay a little boring. Nothing much more to say really. Not an outstanding start to the first voting show.

Martin Kerr
Blue Rodeo - Blue Rodeo Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 - Lost Together Lost Together

There were some nice dynamics in the song but it was a bit on the light side for me too.

Gary Morissette
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle, Vol. 2: Twenty Great CCR Classics (Remastered) - Good Golly Miss Molly Good Golly Miss Molly

That was a fantastic performance. He performed like an old pro.

Tetiana Ostapowych
Julio Iglesias - Love Songs - Feelings Feelings

Tetiana really comes across as a professional when she sings. I really liked her rendition of that classic.

Mitch MacDonald
Gavin DeGraw - Chariot - Follow Through Follow Through

You can really hear Mitch smiling through the song. I think he’s more excited to be on the Canadian Idol stage than actuall be competing. The vocals were a little rough.

Paul Clifford
Seether & Amy Lee - Disclaimer II - Broken (Featuring Amy Lee) Broken

I quite like the husky tones in his voice. It was a pretty good performance by another contestant who seems to have a bit of experience under their belt.

Earl Stevenson
Bob Dylan - The Essential Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower Along the Watchtower

There is something special about Earl. I imagine he’s going a long way.

Lisa Bell
The Doobie Brothers - Best of the Doobies - Long Train Runnin' Long Train Runnin’

This girl has a wicked set of pipes on her. That was a great version of a classic song.

Mookie Morris
Studio 99 - Studio 99 Perform a Tribute to the Beatles - Twist and Shout Twist and Shout

Mookie was fantastic. An authentic sounding performance with some half decent dance moves to boot.

Drew Wright
David Bowie & Queen - Best of Bowie - Under Pressure Under Pressure

It was an ok performance but it felt a little affected to me.

Oliver Pigott
Dave Edmunds - A Pile of Rock - Live - I Hear You Knocking I Hear You Knocking

What a strange performance. It almost felt as though Oliver was trying to show off just how good he is but I don’t think it really paid off.

Katherine St-Laurent
Bonnie Tyler - Mullets Rock! Too! : Mullets In Love - Total Eclipse of the Heart Total Eclipse of the Heart

The song was too big for Katherine. Her voice just didn’t seem to be up for the task.
