The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that the Bravo!-commissioned GENIUS WITHIN: THE INNER LIFE OF GLENN GOULD has been shortlisted for an Academy® Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Commissioned and developed by Bravo!, the film had its world broadcast premiere on Bravo! earlier this year and recently went on to win a Gemini Award for Best Biography Documentary Program.

GENIUS WITHIN is one of fifteen documentaries that will move onto the second round of voting that will determine the final nominees in the category.

“Congratulations to Peter Raymont and everyone at White Pines Pictures for this incredible honour,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. “Since its premiere at TIFF in 2009, GENIUS WITHIN has been wowing audiences with its detailed portrait of one of Canada’s most iconic artists, and we’re proud to have been a part of it from the beginning.”

As an enigmatic musical poet and world-renowned pianist, Canada’s own Glenn Gould continues to captivate 28 years after his untimely death. A collaboration between award-winning documentary filmmaker Peter Raymont and award-winning editor Michèle Hozer, Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould explores the personal side of Glenn Gould the man, how he turned his back on celebrity for the sake of his art and whose devotion to his craft cost him the relationships most dear to him.

Intimately revealing the man behind the myth, GENIUS WITHIN: THE INNER LIFE OF GLENN GOULD casts a fresh light on the mysterious pianist whose ideas were as controversial, and his private life as passionate, as his music. The film features never-before seen footage of Gould, photographs, and excerpts from his private home recordings and diaries. The biography also reveals personal memories from Gould’s most intimate friends and lovers, some who have never spoken about him publicly before.
