TORONTO, ON (March 12, 2009) – Professional ballet hopefuls push their skills and test their limits in BALLET HIGH, premiering Thursday, April 2 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on Bravo! Part of Bravo!’s 13-week DOCFEST 2009, BALLET HIGH is a 90-minute original arts documentary about students at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet during the final year of the intense, seven-year training program. Produced in association with Bravo!, BALLET HIGH is rife with rivalries and tension as the dancers prepare to leap into the competitive world of professional ballet.
BALLET HIGH reveals the triumphs and defeats as a group of dancers journey through their toughest year at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The program is a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the grueling technique classes, challenging rehearsals, strenuous exams and other demands of the ballet world. Students are stretched to their physical and emotional limits, struggling with both injuries and confidence as they train their bodies to be perfect for ballet. During the process, they learn about themselves, each other and life on the road as they set out on their first tour.
One featured dancer faces the challenge of preparing for the Youth America Grand Prix, a competition attended by scouts from professional dance companies. For the lucky few with professional potential, this competition is a critical step toward achieving their dream. BALLET HIGH also captures the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s company auditions, where some dancers thrive under the pressure, while others fall apart.
BALLET HIGH is a follow up to the acclaimed documentary series BALLET GIRLS, co-produced by vonnie VON HELMOLT film and Merit Motion Pictures.
