The singing hopefuls continue to belt out a tune on the IDOL stage in hopes of capturing the viewer’s votes on the live performance show.

American Idol executive producer has told fans that Pia Toscano was never a front-runner to take the title this year.

The surprise elimination of the 22-year-old singer left many stunned last week, including judge Jennifer Lopez who believed Toscano was safe.

Lythgoe said that despite the public outcry, there were better singers in the competition than Toscano.

“Number one, I know the results so I know she was never a frontrunner,” he said. “When I heard that she was going, I was pretty upset – angry, you could say,” Lythgoe told Yahoo! Music.

“The more I’ve sort of thought about it, the more I’ve calmed down, I’ve realised that at the end of the day, this is going to happen every week now because the talent is so strong.

“The fact of the matter is that it appears Pia didn’t connect with the audience as much as we maybe think she did. And she wasn’t voted through. That’s the fact of the matter.”

The competition narrows down as another contestant is eliminated.

TV audiences, it seems, are getting older despite youth-oriented shows ruling the ratings in the US.

Where twenty years ago Cheers was the most popular show in TV with an average audience age of 34, American Idol is now the current king of television yet its average audience is 43.

So what are the reasons behind the almost 10-year jump in the average viewer age of televisions favourite shows?

New York Magazine claims it may be due to three reasons: young people watching less TV, the fall of sitcoms, and the rise of pay TV services.

Simon Cowell has admitted that he believes American Idol has improved since he departed the show last year.

Cowell spoke to Piers Morgan on his CNN show Piers Morgan Tonight, saying he feels the current line-up of Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler is working well.

“I personally think it is a better show than last year. I genuinely mean that. I think what they have got is that they have their energy back, they are confident, they are competitive,” he said.

“I said to everyone on my show [The X Factor], ‘If you think Idol is going to be the same as last year, think again’. They are working ten times as hard… as I would. And I think it’s a good show. I can’t really fault it.

“It’s not the show I would make myself, that’s why I moved from the show in the first place. I want to make something different. But for Idol, based on last year, I think it’s better.”
