CTV announced today its hot mid-season schedules, including the much buzzed-about psychological thriller, The Following (Jan. 21) and new original drama series Motive (Feb. 3).

The two series are among seven brand-new programs coming to CTV and CTV Two in 2013, including Do No Harm (Jan. 31), Golden Boy (March 8), Cult (Feb. 19), Red Widow (March 3), and Family Tools (May 1).

The CTV schedule is also bolstered by the return of ratings stalwart American Idol, critical darling Smash, and a new season of Top 3 hit The Amazing Race. Continue reading »

Mariah Carey has said that she had reservations about joining the judging panel for American Idol this season.

The singer told reporters this week that it was her husband Nick Cannon that urged her to take the opportunity.

“He really wanted me to do this and I had my own kind of reservations — I didn’t know how I would adapt to this situation.” she said. “But it’s great to be here, I’m happy and honored to be here.

Former American Idol judge Steven Tyler has offered his opinion on the current crop of judges and caused a bit of controversy at the same time.

The Aerosmith frontman gave his thoughts on the supposed Nicki Minaj/Mariah Carey beef, telling MTV: “They should have something going on, which is calledcamaraderie.”

He continued: “They should have something going on so thick and beautiful that they can lay it over the new talent that’s trying to birth itself. It needs to be birthed, not judged by ‘entertainment’ factors, it needs to be judged by people that [are] honest, true, that have the ‘it’ factor. Not the ‘it’ factor because they can fight. Following months of rumours, the brand new judging panel for American Idol has finally been confirmed.

Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj will join Randy Jackson on the panel for the twelfth season of the Fox show.

With the departure of both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler last season, Idol producers have opted for a four person panel again.

Urban will join Idol from the Australian version of The Voice, for which he served as a coach alongside Seal, Joel Madden and Delta Goodrem. Continue reading »

Nick Jonas has confirmed that he fancies a role as a judge on American Idol.

The singer has been linked to the series over the past few weeks and has confirmed that “it would be a dream come true” if he is selected.

“The rumours are true. I am being considered to be a judge on American Idol, and it would be a dream come true if it happens. #nickonidol,” he tweeted.

Charlie Sheen has said he is “genuinely interested” in a judging role on American Idol.

The actor has been rumoured to be in the running to nab one of the now vacant spots on the judging panel after the departure of both Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

Sheen told Ryan Seacrest on the latter’s radio show this week that he is interested as well as intrigued that Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe mentioned his name. Continue reading »

Steven Tyler has announced his departure from American Idol after two seasons on the show.

The Aerosmith frontman says he is leaving in order to concentrate on his band.

Tyler said in a statement: “After some long hard thoughts, I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit.

“I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band. Jennifer Lopez has dropped a pretty big hint that she won’t be returning to American Idol next season.

The singer and actress said while promoting her new Ice Age movie that she is looking to do other things.

American Idol has posted its worst US numbers for a season finale in its history.

The season 11 finale this week, where Phillip Phillips was crowned the winner over Jessica Sanchez, was watched by 21.5 million people on Fox in America, which is down 26% on last season.

While the numbers are still big for a single show of any kind, they are well down on previous finales, including that of season one way back in 2002.

Here in Canada, 2.8 million viewers tuned in on CTV, which was enough to secure the number one spot for the show on Wednesday night. Continue reading »
