The 84th Annual Academy Awards proved once again its status as one of television’s premiere broadcasts when 6.1 million viewers watched THE OSCARS® last night on CTV.

Marking his ninth time as host, Billy Crystal drove more younger viewers to the just over three-hour broadcast, up 8% among A18-34, while total viewers remained steady compared to last year (6.11 million).

THE 84th ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS becomes the second-most watched broadcast of the year, following SUPER BOWL XLVI (7.3 million, CTV), and the #1 entertainment broadcast of the season.

· In all, more than one in two viewers (54.1%) watching television last night in English Canada were watching the OSCARS on CTV.

· Overall, the broadcast attracted 14.1 million unique viewers, peaking at an incredible 7.03 million viewers at 10 p.m. as the legendary Christopher Plummer graciously accepted his OSCAR® for Best Supporting Actor.

Eddie Murphy has quit as host of the 2012 Academy Awards ceremony.

The comedian has followed producer Brett Ratner in leaving the production, with producer Ratner announcing his departure earlier this week.

“First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony,”Murphy said in a statement. “I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak said he supported Ratner in his decision to leave.

“I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well,” he said.

Young Hollywood is getting another boost thanks to the Academy Awards producers. Anne Hathaway & James Franco have been tapped to co-host this years show. Anne is a bit nervous as she told Entertainment Tonight: “I found out that I’m one of three women to host since … I think it was 1987. Maybe I’m the fourth, I’m not sure. I’m still learning all the amazing statistics that I almost don’t want to know because it gets a little bit too intimidating.”

Anne is currently starring in “Love and Other Drugs” with Jake Gyllenhaal while James is in the film “127 Hours”.

This won’t be Anne’s first time hosting. Recently she was a gust host on Saturday Night Live.

The show will air live on CTV February 27th from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. Nominations will be announced January 25th where Hathaway and Franco could score a nod.
