Production has begun on Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning, a three-hour movie and television event set to have its world premiere on CTV in 2008.
A New Beginning is the prequel to the original 1985 Anne of Green Gables mini-series. In a completely new screenplay by Sullivan, Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning reveals Anne's early life before her arrival at Green Gables.
The movie is book-ended by the introduction of Anne as an older woman now in her fifties, played by Emmy and Golden-Globe winning actress Barbara Hershey (The Portrait of a Lady, Hannah and Her Sisters). Rachel Blanchard (7th Heaven, Clueless) rounds out the cast as Louisa Thomas.
After screening nearly 1,000 young girls from around the globe, Toronto's Hannah Endicott-Douglas has been cast by Sullivan as the newest Anne Shirley for the movie.
Endicott-Douglas co-stars with Rachel Blanchard and Academy Award nominee Barbara Hershey, who plays Anne as a woman in her fifties reflecting on her past.
Today's announcement of the new Anne Shirley follows an extensive search to find an actress who could play one of Canada's most beloved fictional characters and an international icon.
The search included an open casting call on YouTube, a cross-Canada audition tour and screening nearly a thousand young girls' audition submissions from Canada, the United States, England and Australia.
After three months of searching, 12-year-old Hannah Endicott-Douglas (The Good Witch; Samantha: An American Girl) was chosen by award-winning filmmaker Kevin Sullivan to carry on the legacy of Anne Shirley. Principal photography continues until November 7, 2007 on location throughout Ontario.

I haven't even seen the movie yet and I'm wondering where Diana is. What's up with that? Where is she? And why did they kill off Gilbert? That doesn't make any sence. I agree, Megan Follows is the best Anne and should have been in the movie.Eric
Dear Janice,
I ususally do not respond to comments on webpages but when i read your comment about Megan Follows, I found it a little disconcerting. Megan Follows was 'Anne' she looked like she stepped right out of L.M. Montgomery's novels. I am not sure if you have read the novels like I have but she had the perfect look. Not taking anything away from the young Miss Douglas who plays the new Anne, which looks too well fed to be Anne Shirley at that point in her life. Maybe rewatching the first 'Anne' movie and reading the actual novel might change your mind.
With all good intentions

Okay, I'm still crying because I missed it. I live in the US and we do not get CTV here. The only place that I have been able to find it on DVD is on Sullivan's website for an additional $80 in one of their packages. If you add up the cost for the other items that are included, they are charging $80 for the DVD!! YIKES! Does anyone know where I might be able to get a DVD of it elsewhere at a better price or where I might be able to watch it online? I would really appreciate the help in finding it, from one "Anne fan" to another. Thanks!
Patricia
O.k. I watched it. It was an enjoyable film to watch. The computer graphics were no so real though. Especially when Anne was on the bridge with her agent and a couple of wagon scenes of horses riding through road paths. The film did bring back a whole lot of fun and excitement. I do wish Gilbert was still alive and instead of 3 they should of had their original 7 children.
The editing of the film towards the end was not so well done. I felt it was rushed especially when Barbara Hershey was walking towards the house with her agent and her pant was stuck in her sock. Somebody must of saw that when they were shooting. It called "Cuuuut". Also when they were shooting the family gathering around Anne and her brother Andrew was arriving. There was one little blond girl who kept looking directly into the camera and making funny faces. Didn't anybody see that when they were filming. It's called editing.
Overall the film was not a kindered Spirit with the audience but it was enjoyable to watch. I will watch it again in reruns.

I agree with all of these comments, and the one about the actress who played young Anne. First of all, Gilbert wasn't killed off in the books. Secondly, you can't have anyone play Anne except Megan Follows. What in the hell is Sullivan thinking? And what was with the ruby red lips on both young and old Anne? They looked painted. The only original actress on that screen was the actress who played Rachel Lynde and if anyone did the math, she would have been well over one hundred. I think Sullivan wrecked the series with this latest one, and apparently, he didn't even approach Follows to play the role. Shame on you, Sullivan, for wrecking such a wonderful saga.

Well.....tonight is the night. I will try to have faith in "Anne of Green Gables the beginning". However I do wish some of the beloved characters did come back and continue what they started together.
Although they killed off Gilbert Blythe which I'm not a fan of the idea. I do hope Barbara Hershey captures the happiness that Anne had through think and thin of life experiences that Megan did.
We all fell in love with the characters soul, their charisma and just plain positive good natured folk. I hope "Anne of Green Gables the beginning" brings the audiences the love and fun that the other series have brought us.

i think the movie will. be okay. but i dislike how it is not based on the books. event the sequel wasn't that good. like harry potter the 5th movie was ruined. and hannah looks nothing like lucy's anne. megan was perfect tfot the role. and in the book, anne never had a son named dominic. what the hec????? he had seven kisd named joyce, jem, walter, nan, diana, shirley, and rilla.

I think Hannah Edicott-Douglas looks to plump and well fed to be Anne. Anne was supposed to be scrawny and wiry! Not with a chubby adorable face! Where is the homely child that no one wants! That eventualy after finding a home grows to outshines everyone! Also They should have cast Megan Fellows as the old Anne, for it would have tied everything together better and made it more nostalgic.

I disagree with most of the above- I think this is all about money and Kevin Sullivan has again ruined the essence of what Lucy Maud Montgomery intended. To exclude Gilbert Blythe from the movie, to exclude Megan Follows, and to add things never intended by Lucy to the movie ruins it for me.

Megan Follows should be playing the older Anne, not Barbara Hershey!!! It just would not be as believable. The idea is great, but without Megan as older Anne, I don't think I could enjoy it as much

I disagree, I think Megan Follows had the perfect look for Anne. For starters, Megan has a very pretty nose and that was what Anne in the novel was suppose to have had. We must admit in the novel and in the film the character Anne makes some very flowerly and sometimes weird speeches that most people couldn't say sincerely and with out laughing. However, Megan pulled this off brillantly she said everyone of the those 'flowery' lines sincerely, like as if she really thought that and commenting on it was just a matter of course. This new Anne actress in the Kevin Sullivan productions has a lot to live up due to the high standards of performance set by Megan Follows. I am certain the new actress can achieve those high standards though.

There are some performers that have that "IT" factor and Megan Follows was in that very rare group, able to touch your soul during their performances, proving them to be unreplaceable and supremely gifted,.... however, I will be looking forward to seeing this new Anne and trusting that she will be wonderful in her own dear way. The books are classic and charming and should live on. Kevin Sullivan is an exceptional and creative person and I am certain will produce a movie that will inspire us all. Blessings †

I have to disagree with you all. They are totally going to ruin it. Ugh.

I have the series of Anne of Green Gable and I'm anxious to see A New Beginning. I love Megan and Gilbert and the rest of the crew especially Marilla. I'm sure Hannah will be as good as Megan. Mr.Kevin Sullivan puts a lot of effort in his work. I wish I knew when the movie will air on CTV so I don't miss.

I believe Hannah to be a very cute Anne Shirley, but I think Janice is wrong. There is no "Anne" like Megan.
I am looking forward to the new movie because I am a HUGE fan.
Thanks Kevin Sullivan! Now do a movie about Lucy Maud herself. =]
Janice
Well, I would say that Hannah Endicott-Douglas looks WAY MORE like Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Anne" than Megan Follows ever will!!
Although Megan was a good actor she just did not have the right look for Anne.
