Ten British celebrities feel the heat in Chef Marco Pierre White’s kitchen when “Hell’s Kitchen U.K.” premieres, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 on Citytv.

Award-winning celebrity chef Marco Pierre White hails from Leeds, England, where culinary skills ran in his blood as his father, grandfather and brothers were all chefs. His first kitchen job reduced Marco to tears but he persevered and soon worked his way up to a job at the two-Michelin starred Box Tree in Ilkley, Yorkshire where he developed his food philosophies.

Marco’s big break came in 1986, when he became head chef and shareholder at an up market burger bar called Harveys, at the age of 24. Since then Marco has opened Canteen in Chelsea Harbour with Michael Caine, Quo Vadis in Soho with Damien Hirst and Frankie’s in Knightsbridge with Frankie Dettori. He has gone on to open more than 30 restaurants, building up a portfolio that’s reputedly worth £50 million.

Marco has fine tuned his reputation for ruthlessness by throttling his staff, hanging chefs by their aprons from hooks on the walls and slashing their uniforms with his knife should they complain. Dubbed “London’s Rudest Chef” by the British press, Marco Pierre White has even gone head-to-head with the hot-tempered Chef Gordon Ramsay in a very public feud. After a seven year hiatus from the kitchen, Chef White is back and ready to groom Britain’s next great culinary genius providing that the ten would-be chefs can handle a little constructive criticism!

With filming of four episodes of the highly anticipated new series Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… complete, CTV announced today the initial guest lineup for the groundbreaking new music television series. The series boasts an impressive international guest list which includes Sir Elton John, Tony Bennett, Lou Reed, artist-director Julian Schnabel and former President Bill Clinton. Additional guests appearing this season will be announced soon. Production of Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… continues this summer and fall; the series will premiere later this year on CTV and Bravo!

As previously announced, the Canada/United Kingdom co-production will air on CTV in Canada, Channel 4 in the UK and the Sundance Channel in the U.S. (broadcast schedule is yet to be announced). FremantleMedia Enterprises will handle sales of the show to the rest of the world.

Fusing the best of talk and music television, the first episode taped for this 13-part series invites viewers to enjoy an intimate conversation between host Elvis Costello and Spectacle Executive Producer Sir Elton John before they make music history by performing together for the first time on television.

“I’m hoping that future shows continue to embody the great joy, passion and celebration of music we’ve had thus far, mixed with rare poignant and powerful moments,” said Spectacle host Elvis Costello. “It’s early to say too much about Spectacle other than it has been a wonderful and surprising experience.”

“You very rarely get to hear what a great musician has to say. You’re on and off in five minutes,” said Sir Elton John. “This is an intelligent show hosted by an extremely intelligent man – with intelligent artists as guests … and to get this on tape is important. It’s very hard to do something like this … give Elvis 10 out of 10 for balls.”

“This eclectic group of international performers will not only provide memorable performances, but through the intimate environment of the show, viewers will also be exposed to a new side of some of their favourite musicians,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc.

“Elvis Costello plus three music legends, an art world maverick and one uniquely engaged former President of the United States produced some of the most insightful conversations about music (and a few other things), as well as a stack of extraordinary and original musical performances that were almost certainly once-in-a-lifetime moments. All in all, not a bad start,” said Executive Producer and creator Stephen Warden.

“My partners and I set out to make a program that we would want to watch. Spectacle is an unapologetically intelligent and massively entertaining show about music and contemporary culture that has no parallel in television today. Our first few episodes feature a knight, a president and the guitar player to the king,” added Executive Producer Martin Katz, referring to Sir Elton John, President Bill Clinton and James Burton, Elvis Presley’s long-time band member.

Additional musical special guests confirmed for this season include musicians Davey Faragher, Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve of The Imposters; guitarist James Burton, who played with Elvis Presley; legendary producer, pianist, writer, arranger and singer Allen Toussaint; three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist Charlie Haden; jazz guitarist and composer Pat Metheny, winner of 17 Grammy Awards; jazz pianist Bill Charlap; Larry Campbell and Tony Garnier of Bob Dylan’s touring band; keyboard player Kevin Hearn, of Barenaked Ladies; and violinist/vocalist Jenny Scheinman. More will be announced soon.

The series of 13 one-hour episodes of Spectacle will feature everything from intimate one-on-ones with legendary performers and notable newcomers to thematic panel discussions.

The program’s eclecticism and depth reflect its uniquely qualified host. Elvis Costello is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee; a Grammy and Ivor Novello Award-winning (and Oscar-nominated) songwriter and performer comfortable in almost every genre imaginable; a musicologist of formidable breadth and knowledge; a contributor to Vanity Fair magazine; and a noted wit whose stint as guest host on The Late Show with David Letterman won rave reviews.

Consistent with Sir Elton John’s long-standing commitment to philanthropy and music, the series producers have struck an exciting association with the (Product) RED (www.joinred.com) campaign created to raise awareness and money for the Global Fund (www.theglobalfund.org) to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Africa. Select program excerpts and performances will be distributed in a variety of new media and conventional platforms, with a portion of the profits directed to the Global Fund.

The producers of Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… are Stephen Warden, former music journalist and artist manager (Remy Shand) of reinvention entertainment; entertainment lawyer Jordan Jacobs (numerous Grammy and JUNO winners) of SpyBox Pictures; and film producer Martin Katz (Hotel Rwanda) of Prospero Pictures. The three, based in Toronto, formed Tri-Fi Productions to produce the series in partnership with David Furnish and Steve Hamilton-Shaw of Rocket Pictures. The series is produced in association with CTV, Sundance Channel, Channel 4 and FremantleMedia. Executive Producers are Sir Elton John, Elvis Costello, David Furnish, Steve Hamilton-Shaw, Jordan Jacobs, Martin Katz and Stephen Warden. Co-Executive Producer is Alex Coletti.

A Thrilling Look at Wildlife Conservation Comes to Animal Planet with Two New Perspectives – Investigation Earth with Jeff Corwin and Raw Nature – Starting July 17

Open your eyes to the effects of human development on wildlife around the world with two edgy new series, Investigation Earth with Jeff Corwin and Raw Nature.

This immersive perspective on conservation starts Thurs., July 17 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT during Animal Planet’s month-long freeview* with Investigation Earth with Jeff Corwin.

In this enlightening one-hour special, animal expert Jeff Corwin gets up-close-and-personal with endangered animals all over the world to find out how humans have altered animal habitats in the wilderness. Corwin’s passion for conservation and his love for animals is infectious – but more importantly, the cutting-edge scientific research he conducts in the wild is key to helping save animal life around the globe.

As a trained biologist and anthropologist, Corwin’s findings become part of the solution as he spotlights the conservation challenges that humans are both creating and solving.

Following Investigation Earth with Jeff Corwin, is the heart-pounding series Raw Nature. Premiering Wed., July 30 at 9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT, this five-part series presents a striking new entertainment perspective on animal adventures with non-experts.

Raw Nature follows filmmakers Matt Renner, Mitch Tanen, Gianny Truttman and Anneli Gericke as they travel across the world to document first-hand accounts of dedicated wildlife professionals working to help animals survive human encroachment. Used to filming the action – not being part of it – the producers are caught off guard with their too-close-for-comfort encounters with some of the planet’s deadliest creatures, including Komodo dragons, white rhinos and giant anacondas.

With conservation as its focus, this series offers an unprecedented look at the intersection between human nature and animal instinct and is a serious reminder that the world needs balance to ensure its own survival.

From the crude spears discovered in the earliest traces of civilizations to the present state-of-the-art fighter planes, humankind’s development and weapons have gone hand-in-hand.

Weaponology travels back through generations of technology to track the evolution of these deadly instruments.

Premiering Wed., June 18 at 10 p.m. ET/11 p.m. PT, this 13-part series chronicles the great leaps and bounds in weapons technology that have changed the course of history.

Weapons have progressed from catapults to laser-guided instruments, but the growth from early innovative weaponry to modern super weapons is not as simple as one may think.

Weaponology takes an in-depth look at how weapons are the result of a combination of ingenious inventions, lateral thinking, battlefield experience and sometimes sheer luck.

How did the quiet streets of Montreal create a terrorist intent on bombing LAX airport? Inspired by real-life events, the timely CTV Original Movie The Terrorist Next Door premieres Sunday, June 15 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.

Before 9/11, and days before Y2K, there was Ahmed Ressam – aka the “Millennium Bomber.” An Algerian immigrant who was recruited by an al-Qaeda terrorist sleeper cell operating in Canada, Ressam went on to be investigated by CSIS and the FBI and arrested for his part in a plot to kill innocent people at Los Angeles’ busiest airport. The Terrorist Next Door transports viewers back to a more innocent age, when few Canadians could ever imagine that terror sleeper cells were rooted on their own soil.

Directed by Jerry Ciccoritti (Lives of the Saints, Trudeau), written by Suzette Couture (The Man Who Lost Himself) and executive produced by Pierre Sarrazin (The Man Who Lost Himself, Doomstown) and Richard Lalonde (Ma Fille Mon Ange, Last Exit), The Terrorist Next Door was recently accepted into competition at the Roma Fiction Fest next month in Italy.

The Terrorist Next Door takes viewers into the very human story of a young Algerian immigrant named Ahmed Ressam (Chenier Hundal, Partition), from his arrival in Montreal to his recruitment by Majid (Reda Guerinik, Incendies), the leader of an al-Qaeda sleeper cell. Majid’s wife, Nicole (Kathleen Robertson, Hollywoodland, Last Exit), who converted to Islam for the husband she loves, is blind to the fact that his travels as head of an international charity are for less-than-philanthropic ends.

Nicole’s world implodes when an old flame – Pelletier (Chris William Martin, Chaos Theory), now a Canadian Security Intelligence Service officer teamed up with an FBI agent Wade (Michael Ironside, The Machinist) – makes a desperate attempt to convince her that her husband married her as a cover, and is deeply involved in a terrorist plot. But the baton has already been passed, and the chase is on to stop Ressam before he can accomplish his devastating mission in Los Angeles.

In the events following the conclusion of the film, Ressam was arrested in 1999, and eventually convicted of smuggling a bomb into the United States from Canada as part of an al-Qaeda plot to blow up Los Angeles International Airport on New Year’s Eve.

“The Terrorist Next Door is a dramatic thriller but also an insightful look at terrorism in our own backyard,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. “This is a story that made headlines around the world and continues to have reverberations to this day.”

“The Terrorist Next Door tells the troubling and complex story of a young man who came to Canada looking for freedom and ended up choosing terrorism,” said Executive Producer Pierre Sarrazin (The Man Who Lost Himself).

The Terrorist Next Door also stars Jean-Francois Blanchard (Catch Me if You Can) as CSIS Officer Elmore and Paul Doucet (October 1970, Maurice Richard) as Burgess.
