HGTV's blog

HGTV.ca, Canada’s ultimate website for the hottest home related information is launching three original web series offering visitors brand new, exclusive online content.

Premiering October 21 the first online series Model Home Showdown consists of five four-minute webisodes featuring dynamic HGTV personalities Cheryl Torrenueva (Superstar Design Challenge, Colin & Justin’s Home Heist) and Andrew Pike (Superstar Design Challenge, Design Rivals) as they each design and fully decorate one model home for Empire Communities in Brantford, Ontario. Buzzed about Model Home Showdownwill be followed by the web series The Switch with Samantha Pynn and Starting Point.

Each Model Home Showdown webisode shows Cheryl and Andrew as they work to design their model home. They have the same budget but different styles and homes. As they battle the clock, Cheryl and Andrew feel the pressure as they pick out finishes in the showroom, encounter and overcome an act of vandalism and troubleshoot problems with furniture delivery.

Throughout the process, viewers will gain valuable insights on choosing finishes for a new-build, mixing and matching standard finishes with upgrades, and learn how to choose a lasting palette for their home.

“We’re always developing content that offers our site users and HGTV fans exclusive and compelling content that complements the on-air show themes and these web series do just that,” said Christine Geddes, Director of Online Content, HGTV.ca and Foodnetwork.ca. “Featuring well-known HGTV personalities and new design ideas and techniques that are very accessible and easy to replicate, HGTV.ca and the web series are the perfect extension of well-liked HGTV shows.”

This November, HGTV.ca will launch the six-part web series The Switch with Samantha Pynn. In each webisode Sam (Pure Design) tackles one area of a home from: a bedroom, to a dining table or window treatments and provides two different design opportunities for each, offering practical tips as she goes. In 2011 HGTV.ca will launch Starting Point, a web series outlining key principles of interior design. Each two-to-three minute webisode will focus on one décor element and feature designer Anita Wiklém as she demonstrates how to design a space that is coherent and stylish using that element.

This week marks the launch of HGTV’s hotly-anticipated Fall schedule and eye-catching advertising campaign. This season HGTV is highlighting two entertaining series – the exciting brand-new U.S. acquisition Selling New York and Canadian viewer-favourite Income Property – with clever creative executions that promote the breadth of home related content available on HGTV.

Selling New York will seduce viewers with tales of New York City’s extravagant residential properties and the colourful characters who buy and sell them. It’s a rare glimpse into the lives and homes of the rich and famous – all of which stands out in the print, radio spots and on-air creative.

On-air promos offer a look through a key hole into a glamorous home providing viewers with a sneak peek into the exclusive high-end world of Manhattan real estate and will air across Canwest specialty channels and Global including a roadblock on day of launch.

Print creative takes a different yet equally glamourous approach, showcasing a dazzling New York City skyline at night with full-page colour ads running in national and regional newspapers and with subway platform posters in select Toronto stations.

The series will be promoted online across all Canwest websites and on high traffic sites including: MSN.ca, Yahoo.ca and Sympatico.ca. Radio spots will be heard across female skewing radio stations across Toronto and surrounding markets.

To drive awareness of the smash-hit series Income Property, the creative takes a fresh and humorous approach by featuring a stack of money with host Scott McGillivray on the face of the bills that playfully reinforces the premise of the show – how one can turn their home into an income generating property. The campaign consists of subway platform posters in Toronto, radio spots on male-skewing radio stations and on-air promos airing on Canwest Specialty channels and Global leading up to the premiere.

“This Fall we played up the entertaining and informative nature of HGTV. The creative for Selling New York emphasizes the glitz and glamour of high-end New York City real estate while campaign elements for Income Property position host and expert Scott McGillivray as someone who’ll help viewers make money,” said Solange Bernard, Director of Marketing, Lifestyle Channels, Canwest Broadcasting. “We’re sure HGTV’s alluring and amusing Fall advertising campaign promoting two very different but equally widely appealing series will resonate with audiences and drive viewership.”

The four-week multi-platform campaign targeting Adults 25-54 in Toronto, Kitchener, London, Ottawa and Vancouver also includes promotion of Selling New York and Income Property at Fall home shows in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.

Selling New York debuts on HGTV in September

Behind every property up for sale is a fascinating story.

HGTV is giving viewers a rare glimpse inside the high-stakes world of buying and selling luxury Manhattan properties in the new series Selling New York.

This series explores tales of lavish residential properties and the people who buy and sell them. The bidding begins Wednesday September 8 at 9pm ET/PT.

“Selling New York explores the extreme and fascinating lengths New York City real estate agents go to, to sell a property,” said says Emily Morgan, Vice President of Content for HGTV, Food Network and DIY Network. “It’s a behind-the-scenes series unlike anything HGTV has aired before and we’re extremely excited to bring viewers an insider’s look at the opulent lifestyle and jaw-dropping price tags of those who call Tribeca, Soho and the Upper East Side home.”

In each episode cameras follow a colourful group of assertive and razor-sharp brokers from two upscale Manhattan based boutique real estate firms: Core Group NYC and Gumley Haft Kleier. Gumley Haft Kleier is a family business headed up by Michelle Kleier. Her partners include her husband, Ian, and their daughters, Samantha Kleier Forbes, Sabrina Kleier Morgenstern, and son-in-law Rob Morgenstern.

Selling multimillion-dollar apartments to an older Upper East Side clientele is how the family has made their mark in the real estate world. Core is the younger, hipper firm. Led by the charming but intense Shaun Osher, Core caters to young professionals who are prepared to pay more than $2 million for a parking spot, storage space and doorman.

These realtors do whatever it takes to close a deal. From scheduling photo shoots and last-minute open houses to pampering a potential buyer with front row tickets to New York Fashion Week and planning lavish cocktail parties at new property listings. High-end New York real estate is a cut-throat industry where a broker’s job never stops and the wheeling and dealing takes place 24 hours a day. In New York a real estate agent is required to be a personal shopper, dog-walker, therapist and more.
