The bloody violence of the ongoing Syrian uprising continuously topped headlines this year, locking it into the #1 spot on CTV National News’s Top 10 News Stories of the year.

The Syrian crisis is followed by last week’s tragic U.S. school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut at #2, and rounding out the Top 3 stories of 2012 is coverage of continuing worldwide financial struggles.

CTV Toronto’s Tom Brown has been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Recognized for his work on the station’s annual Toy Mountain campaign benefitting The Salvation Army, Brown has helped make wishes come true on Christmas morning for thousands of children across the GTA since becoming involved when he joined CTV News in 2004.

Presided over by the Honourable David C. Onley, Brown received the prestigious award in a ceremony held last night at Queen’s Park in Toronto.

“It was my privilege to nominate Tom Brown for the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal,” said Major John Murray of The Salvation Army. “Tom is a passionate supporter of the Salvation Army and those that we serve. He is dedicated and committed to helping raise awareness of The Salvation Army’s work and he is engaged in every aspect of the CTV Toy Mountain Campaign. The Super Bowl, The 84th Annual Academy Awards and the 100th Grey Cup are the most-watched television events of 2012 in Canada, BBM data confirms.

Additional live television programming like the IIHF World Junior Championship, The Grammy Awards, and American idol were also of major interest.

Bell Media announced today a new television special in celebration of the creation of Cirque du Soleil Media, its new joint venture with the Montreal entertainment company.

The television special eTalk Presents: Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away premieres Friday, Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on CTV, the same day that Cirque du Soleil’s big screen spectacle Worlds Away opens in theatres across North America.

CTV’s newest original Canadian production has scored a touchdown with the announcement today that the thrilling new scripted dramatic series Motive will premiere in the most coveted timeslot in prime time television – immediately following a hand-off from Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, Feb. 3.
