This year’s Performers include:

Plain White T’s

For almost a decade, Plain White T’s have been playing to packed audiences craving that perfect pop-punk punch. Their journey has taken the band to Warped Tour three times, landed them opening slots for bands like Jimmy Eat World and AFI, and now finds the high-energy five-piece about to kick-off the 2007 Young Wild Things Tour with Fall Out Boy and Gym Class Heroes. Plain White T’s are road warriors in the truest sense and with their first major label album, Every Second Counts, the band is ready to rock in a big way. PWT’s story started back in high school, when frontman Tom Higgenson first stepped into Chicago’s famed rock club The Metro and saw his future on the stage. Armed with paper, pen and guitar, Tom went to task experimenting with lyrics and melodies on a four-track in his parents’ Villa Park, Illinois home. Once he’d recruited bandmates Dave Tirio, Mike Retondo, De’Mar Hamilton and Tim Lopez, it was only a matter of a time before the Plain White T’s were playing the Metro themselves. The music industry took notice of their success and after selling thousands of copies of their self-released 2002 debut, Stop, PWT’s were picked up by Fearless Records. But it was their acoustic-tinged Hey There Delilah that cemented their status as potential hit makers, garnering them two Grammy nominations this year.

Roz Bell

Roz Bell’s debut album, The First Sunbeams is the sum total of a wildly diverse set of influences all coming together on his first record. The first single, Yesterday Man, shows Roz’s eclectic nature in song writing and his talent as a musician. It’s an album made up of short, simple stories, the boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl sort of timeless songs that are the foundation for contemporary music. Born Kevin Rosaire Bellemare and raised in Holland Landing, his parents schooled him on country classics. Still, like every good music-loving youngster, he had to find his own music. Hip-hop’s had a strong hold on Roz. He started writing rap songs at age 13 before discovering thoughtful rock in high school. The First Sunbeams is definitely a singing and guitar playing album, but also a whole lot more. Few people can so effortlessly synthesize a youth full of country records, high school rap years and an emerging singer/songwriting streak into simple, genre-defying classic pop … but that’s what Roz has done with The First Sunbeams.

Cast of We Will Rock You

The Toronto Cast of We Will Rock You stars many of the brightest talents from across the country, including Yvan Pedneault as the rebel hero Galileo, Erica Peck as the feisty Scaramouche, Alana Bridgewater as the Killer Queen, Evan Buliung as Khashoggi, Jack Langedijk as Pop, Sterling Jarvis as Britney and Valerie Stanois as Oz. Now playing at the Canon Theatre in Toronto, the production has not had a single performance where audiences haven’t stood and cheered (and danced in the aisles).

His debut release is called Memoirs Of A Playbwoy, but JDiggz is more than a frivolous bon vivant. Not only can he charm the ladies, but he can lay down a slick rhyme and produce the beats to match. His talents have been noticed by the likes of video director Lil X, The Game and he participated in this years “Back to School” national campaign for Roots Canada, and his album is in stores now! The future is bright for Canada’s hottest up-and-coming rap star.

Samba Squad

Created by award-winning percussionist Rick Shadrach Lazar, Samba Squad is an innovative batteria (drum corps) born out of the Brazilian tradition of Batucada and Escola de Samba. This vibrant 20-plus member tear-down-da-house percussion posse takes you on a dance-till-you-drop tour of global grooves. Samba Squad shows bust out in energy and excitement, as cutting edge innovations fulfill the beat migrations created by the African Diaspora: the musical roots of Afro-Brasil, Afro-Cuba, North and West Africa, as well as elements of Urban Funk and Hip-hop, are dropped into a seething cauldron to produce a raw organic dance part-tay.

The iconic competition show of the 90s returns with more thrills, stunts and spectacle then ever before. In the newly revamped “American Gladiators” amateur athletes – at the top of their game – face off against 12 new Gladiators in a David and Goliath style battle. Six men and six women make up the team of action-adventure stars prepared to stop at nothing to destroy the competition. As each challenger prepares to go head to head with a villainous Gladiator, the viewer gets an inside glimpse into their world as they train for their match. Opposing forces fight it out in classic events such as The Joust, The Wall, Hang Tough and the Eliminator which have received serious upgrades with more adrenaline and water stunts.

“American Gladiators” marks the first time wrestling great Hulk Hogan and boxing champion Laila Ali have hosted a competition show.

No stranger to athletic competition, Hulk Hogan is a gladiator in his own right. A former WWE Champion many times over, Hogan is one of the most well known wrestlers of all-time. Throughout the course of his extraordinary career, Hogan has accomplished things no other wrestler has. He is the only wrestler ever to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he has headlined 10 WrestleManias and he’s starred in numerous feature films. Most recently Hogan, along with his family, opened their home to the American public starring in the reality show “Hogan Knows Best”, which documents their every day life. In 2005, Hogan’s illustrious career earned him an induction into the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame by long time friend Sylvester Stallone.

The daughter of world heavyweight champion Mohammad Ali, Laila Ali made her professional boxing debut on October 8th, 1999, and is currently the undefeated Super Middleweight Boxing Champion of the world with a 24-0 record and 21 knock-outs. While Ali has undoubtedly been the major draw in women’s boxing for years, she recently took on a new challenge, strutting her stuff in front of America every week on “Dancing With The Stars.” In addition, she is the author of a motivational book titled Reach!

Tune into the two- hour premiere of American Gladiators on Sunday, January 6th. Then, catch all of the action weekly starting Monday, January 7th on Citytv stations across Canada.
