FashionTelevision icon Jeanne Beker is set to collect the 2012 Canadian Award of Distinction at the Banff World Media Festival.

Beker will join the likes of Howie Mandel, Eric McCormack, Kim Cattrall and Paul Haggis in receiving the award in their careers.

“It’s sort of one of those awards where you sort of wonder, ‘Does this mean I’ve arrived or does this mean it’s time to leave?’”, Beker said.

“I’m really surprised in some ways just because I can’t see the forest for the trees sometimes. I remember early days of my career where I had to fight hard for credibility because I didn’t always have it.” Continue reading »

Metta World Peace, formerly known as NBA basketballer Ron Artest, has attempted to read the weather for an on-air broadcast on CTV BC.

The Lakers player delivered a rather confusing weather forecast for British Columbia viewers on Wednesday.

In reference to BC capital Victoria, World Peace said: “She sounds like she’s hot, but she’s cold.” Continue reading »

CBC is putting some of its office space up for grabs in order to boost revenue.

The leasing of over 74,000 square metres of office space is one of the measures that the broadcaster is hoping will generate around $50 million by 2017.

“There’s a lot of square footage that is not used because of the cuts over the years,” CBC/Radio-Canada CEO Hubert Lacroix told reporters this week.

“What we’re trying to do right now is look to tenants. We’ve already started doing this. We would like to think that we can package some square footage in our buildings to actually invite tenants into our building.” Continue reading »

While CBC won’t reveal their viewer numbers for the Stanley Cup finals until it’s all over, fans in the US haven’t really taken to the all-American clash this year.

Viewer numbers are down in the US for this year’s final through the first three games so far compared to last year’s battle between the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins.

The LA Kings/New Jersey Devils matchup has failed to pull big numbers of viewers on the NBC family of networks despite the added star power of LA’s inclusion. Continue reading »

Remote northern TV viewers will soon have no access to CBC after the broadcaster announced it would be shutting down its analog television transmitters in all rural areas from July 31.

Hundreds of thousands of Canadians will no longer be able to pick up CBC on the old rabbit ears as the broadcaster shifts its focus to digital.

The decision will have a major affect in the likes of northern Manitoba, which as the Conference Board of Canada states has three of the five lowest median income regions in the country.

With cable and satellite services not being an option to many low income households, the departure of CBC is a blow. Continue reading »

Canadians will not be able to enjoy the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games in 3D this year.

The Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium has confirmed that no 3D coverage will be available for Canadian viewers due to a number of reasons.

The cost of providing coverage for a few events as well as the small number of Canadians who actually own 3D TVs were the main factors.

“3D is a very expensive business proposition and a tough business model that requires big investment and support by a number of different partners,” Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium president Adam Ashton said. Continue reading »

TV stars will be among the presenters at the 2012 NHL Awards in Las Vegas on June 20.

CBC will carry coverage of the event, which will see actors from the likes of Entourage, Dexter, 30 Rock and Glee present awards.

Kevin Connolly (“Entourage”), Colin Hanks (“The Good Guys,” “Dexter”), Joshua Jackson (“Fringe”), Cory Monteith (“Glee”), Matthew Perry (“Go On,” “Friends”), Vince Vaughn (“The Watch,” “Wedding Crashers,” “The Break-Up”), Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews and Michael Vartan (“Hawthorne,” “Alias”) will all present awards on the night. Top Chef Canada winner Carl Heinrich will open a new restaurant in Toronto this summer.

The 27-year-old Toronto resident edged out fellow finalists Trevor Bird, David Chrystian and Jonathan Korecki in the finale of the Food Television series.
