Fresh TV and Teletoon have proven that vampires and geeks are a winning combo in kids’ TV as My Babysitter’s a Vampire claimed the 2012 Shaw Rocket Prize at an industry gala held last evening in Ottawa.

Executive Producer Brian Irving was on hand to accept the $50,000 award on behalf of Fresh TV. The Toronto-based production company will be donating the entire cash award to the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) to support their film and TV scholarship programs.

My Babysitter’s a Vampire took a bite out of four other competitors to claim the top prize. The TV series has previously won a GOLD Pixie Award while the companion interactive website, Humans VS Vampires, has won Kidscreen, Digi and Creativity Awards. Continue reading »

It’s the most wonderful time of the year as Astral’s Family Channel spreads the holiday spirit with the return of its annual Twistmas programming line-up from November 30.

Family celebrates the season with two holiday-themed Night of Premieres, Twistmas Marathons and a special hosted New Years Day Countdown. Family OnDemand will be stuffed like a stocking with Twistmas episodes beginning December 7.

Christmas comes a little early this year with a Twistmas Merrython on November 30. Beginning at 6 p.m. ET/PT, Family gifts viewers with winter-themed episodes of Shake It Up, So Random!, Jessie, A.N.T. Farm and the network premiere of the feature film Christmas with the Kranks at 8 p.m. ET/PT. With their daughter Blair (Julie Gonzalo) away, parents Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Luther (Tim Allen) decide to skip Christmas altogether until she decides to come home, causing an uproar when they have to celebrate the holidays at the last minute. Astral’s Family Channel has more blog than bark with the series premiere of Dog With A Blog.

The new live-action Disney Channel comedy is unleashed on Friday, November 23 at 5 p.m. ET/PT and follows a blended family and their newly adopted dog, Stan, who talks and blogs about his owners’ exploits.

The fetching series joins a Night of Premieres beginning at 4 p.m. ET/PT, which includes new episodes of popular series and the network premiere of the feature film Aquamarine.

Told from a canine point of view, Dog With A Blog follows Stan; step-siblings, Tyler, Avery and Chloe; and parents Bennett and Ellen as they adjust to life as a new family. Astral’s Family Channel is marking Bullying Awareness Week with a slate of new original programming airing from November 12 – 18.

This year, the network’s 10th annual Stand UP! campaign features a special programming line-up stocked with original content including a new music video, new bullying-themed celebrity interview segments and a half-hour special presentation of the 2012 Stand UP! Rally featuring Canadian popstar Victoria Duffield and YouTube sensation Mike Tompkins.

The late-night comedic documentary series The Right Hand returns this fall, with more antics from adult film producer Porno Dan and his right-hand-man.

The second season of The Right Hand premieres Thursday, October 4 at midnight MT on Movie Central (Western Canada) and on Friday, October 5 at 11:00 p.m. ET on The Movie Network’s MExcess multiplex channel (Eastern Canada).

Season one saw Porno Dan hire good-natured Canadian film student Brandon MacIntosh as his production assistant. With no experience in the industry, MacIntosh was quickly thrown out of his element and into the adult film world. In the season one finale, Porno Dan asked MacIntosh if he wanted to stay on, but Brandon’s answer was not revealed.

The season two premiere will make known MacIntosh’s answer, as the episode follows the production assistant into the biggest industry event of the year. Continue reading »

Family Channel celebrates its 10th annual Bullying Awareness Week with a comprehensive campaign encouraging Canadian students to Join the Stand UP! Network and stop bullying in their communities.

From November 12 to 18, Family will promote bullying prevention with a week of special programming, the release of an original song, a dedicated website and a Stand UP! student rally in Toronto. is now accepting entries from students and classes wishing to attend the rally.

As part of this year’s campaign, Family commissioned an original song titled “Stand UP! Make Some Noise” that encourages bullying bystanders to intervene when they witness bullying. Lending their voices to the track are special musical guests, Family stars and Canadian youth. Continue reading »

HBO Canada presents Season 2 of Cinemax’s high-octane, globe-spanning series, Strike Back.

The 10-episode second season premieres with two back-to-back episodes on Friday, August 17 beginning at 11 p.m. ET/MT, following Real Time With Bill Maher. Subsequent episodes premiere Friday nights at 11 p.m. ET/MT on HBO Canada.

Perry the Platypus is back in the spotlight this summer as Disney XD debuts the two-part Where’s Perry? special.

When an encounter with Dr. Doofenshmirtz goes awry, Perry disappears leaving backyard inventors Phineas and Ferb without their beloved pet.

In the episode premiere “Where’s Perry?, Part One,” Phineas and Ferb embark on an African safari vacation while their loyal pet platypus Perry stays back in Danville to handle a secret agent emergency mission involving Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

As the story unfolds, Dr. Doofenshmirtz tries to take over with his Ultimate Evil-inator, but it accidentally zaps Carl the Intern, turning him evil.

Several of Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s “-inator” machines hit Perry causing him to disappear and prompting the infamous question: where’s Perry? Meanwhile, in Africa, Candace frantically searches for a cell phone signal to get through to Jeremy back in Danville while Phineas and Ferb build a highly unconventional vehicle to explore an unchartered gorge. Perry’s fate will be revealed during “Where’s Perry?, Part Two” airing Saturday, August 25 at 8 p.m. ET on Disney XD.

Viewers can catch all the marsupial mishaps from the “Where’s Perry?, Part One” special when it debuts on Disney XD OnDemand on August 7, as well as the “Where’s Perry?, Part Two” conclusion beginning September 4. Phineas and Ferb fans are encouraged to make the most of their summer vacation by tuning in to dedicated Phineas and Ferb-themed weekday morning marathons from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET daily.

The adventures continue for Perry with the recently launched “Where’s My Perry?” game accessible by visiting on iOS and Android mobile devices. The game challenges players to guide water across multiple levels of game play and features skill-testing encounters with Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s diabolical “Crazy-inators,” which transform the water into steam, ice or keeps it as a liquid. Temple Street Productions Inc. (Temple Street) and Astral’s Family Channel announced today that principal photography has begun on The Next Step a single camera scripted tween drama, shot in a reality television style.

The show is created by Frank van Keeken, creator of the hit Temple Street series Wingin’ It, which also airs on Family Channel and Disney XD. The series begins shooting today in Toronto.
