This cool info-graphic has been created by Wired to show how the big American broadcast networks – NBC, CBS and ABC – lost their stranglehold on Emmy nominations following the rise of cable networks.

With the introduction of the likes of HBO, AMC, Showtime and FX, who aim to produce a handful of quality “hits” as opposed to the broadcast network’s tactic of developing as many shows as possible to attract a wide audience, the Emmy landscape has changed dramatically.

YTV has confirmed the appointment of Carlos Bustamante (YTV’s The Zone, Big Fun Movies) as the new host of the kid’s competitions series’ sixth season.

Carlos will be joining the cross-Canada audition tour with returning judges Keshia Chanté, Tara Oram, and Mark Spicoluk, to usher The Next Star’s new hopefuls from their first audition to finale.

As a long-time host of YTV’s The Zone, Big Fun Movies and the celebrity interview specials One 2 One, Carlos has interviewed A-list celebrities including One Direction, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. Continue reading »

Maria Nestoras29-year-old Maria Nestoras has beaten to the boys to take out the Canada’s Handyman Challenge title.

For the last eight weeks HGTV Canada celebrities Scott McGillivray (Income Property), Bryan Baeumler (Leave It To Bryan) and Paul Lafrance (Disaster Decks) have been drilling and judging the country’s top amateur handyman talent to find the best of the best in Canada’s Handyman Challenge.

It’s not exactly the catchiest theme tune of all time (or have any words for that matter) but that hasn’t stopped the cast of Games of Thrones from trying to “sing” it for MTV News.

bordersecurityPublic Safety Minister Vic Toews has defended the use of reality TV cameras during immigration raids in Canada.

Toews told Parliament that it is the illegal immigrants who are taking advantage of Canadian taxpayers and not the other way around as some critics are suggesting.

“It is important to remember that illegal immigrants cost law-abiding Canadian taxpayers tens of millions of dollars per year and it costs our constituents thousands of jobs,” said Toews.

The issue has been raised after a reality TV crew was on-hand to film a raid on a construction site in B.C. this month. Continue reading »

own-logo2012The Oprah Winfrey Network Canada has been warned by the Canadian broadcasting regulator that the channel is not airing enough educational material.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission stated that Corus, who own the rights to OWN, failed to adhere to the term of the license granted to the channel, known as Canadian Learning Television (CLT).

The license mandate states that the channel must “provide formal and informal educational programming and learning opportunities that generally focus on adult education and that come from a full spectrum of basic, credit-based, skills-related and life-enhancing programs.” Continue reading »

AngryBirdsToonsCanadian youngsters will be able to check out the new TV series adapted from the hugely popular game Angry Birds.

Teletoon has picked up Angry Birds Toons from Finnish producer Rovio Entertainment for its Saturday morning schedule.

All 52 initial episodes have been acquired, with the first going to air last Saturday.

The executive producers of the new American mini-series The Bible certainly don’t think so.

Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said it is “utter nonsense” that the actor who plays the devil in the series was only cast because he was supposed to resemble the US president.

“This is utter nonsense,” Burnett and Downey said in a statement Monday. “The actor who played Satan, Mehdi Ouzaani, is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several Biblical epics — including Satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our President. Continue reading »

Lukas McFarlane was crowned the winner of Got to Dance on Sunday night (UK time), claiming £250,000 in prize money in the process.

The Calgary native, who is known for performing on only one sock, beat nine other acts in the final of the series, which broadcasts on Sky1.
