Winner crowned on Recipe to Riches

The votes are in and Canadians have chosen Brampton, Ontario’s Rick Matharu and his Butter Chicken Lasagna recipe as the best of the best on Food Network Canada’s competitive reality series Recipe to Riches.

Winning top honours and taking home $250,000, Rick prevailed over six fellow home cooks in Wednesday night’s highly-anticipated season two finale.

“Never in my wildest dreams could I have imaged this would be happening to me,” says Rick Matharu, this season’s winner of Recipe to Riches. “This has been a life-changing experience, and I’m so honoured that so many people across Canada chose me and my recipe as their favourite among all the amazing category winners and their dishes.”

Shortly after all seven category winners were chosen, Canadians had the opportunity to vote for the best of the best during a decisive three days of online voting at Then during Wednesday night’s season finale, the competition came to a dramatic conclusion as the votes were revealed and each finalist was sent home one by one to leave Rick Matharu as the last home cook standing.

All seven category winners took their places in the finale including Nerepis, New Brunswick’s Jason Keary with his Honey Cheese Pastries; Victoria, British Columbia’s Stephen Childs with his Chipotle Chili Bites; Etobicoke, Ontario’s Tracey Rigden with her Dulce de Leche Brownies; Vancouver, British Columbia’s Jackie Koh with her Smoky Korean Meatballs; Burnaby, British Columbia’s Don Harquail with his Golden Toffee Nut Gems; and Gloucester, Ontario’s Cathy Ferguson with her Montreal Deli Dip. All seven category winners’ recipes have been developed into President’s Choice products and are currently available in select Loblaw banner stores across the country.

Hosted by Jesse Palmer (The Bachelor), the competition was judged by a panel of experts including Laura Calder (French Food at Home), Tony Chapman (Capital C) and Dana McCauley (Janes Family Foods). Making a special appearance as a weekly guest judge was Galen G. Weston (Loblaw Companies Limited).

Based in his hometown of Brampton, Rick hosts a radio show alongside his wife on a local Punjabi station. His Butter Chicken Lasagna recipe was inspired by the Indian-Canadian fusion lunches his mother often prepared for him as a child.
