10,000 Canadians sign up for Big Brother Canada

Big Brother Canada came calling and Canadians from coast to coast responded by the thousands.

Set to premiere winter 2013 exclusively on Slice, the first ever Big Brother Canada has wrapped up its national casting tour and online audition process with an astounding 10,000 applicants who are eager to leave their daily routines behind for a chance to live and compete in the Big Brother Canada house.

Stopping in Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Montreal and Toronto throughout September and October, the national casting tour saw Canadians from all walks of life come out to contend for one of 14 highly sought after spots in the Big Brother Canada house. Cut off from friends and family with no access to books, music, news or technology for up to 10 weeks, those selected will be tried and tested in the social experiment that defines the hugely popular Big Brother format.

“We have been blown away by the incredible response from Canadians throughout the casting phase of Big Brother Canada. This is a series like no other, an extreme social experiment where people willingly walk away from their families, friends and day-to-day lives for nearly three months,” said Barbara Williams, Senior Vice President of Content, Shaw Media. “Based on the excitement and passion of the thousands who have applied, we know that we’ll find a legendary group of intriguing characters and big personalities for the inaugural season.”

Thousands of hopefuls waited in line for hours for their chance to impress producers with costumes, songs, speeches and quirky personalities. Online application videos poured in by the thousands featuring scores of soon-to-be YouTube sensations.

“Casting Big Brother Canada has been an incredible experience, the overwhelming response from Canadians has inspired me and my team. What really blew me away was the dramatic enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the show that we saw from candidates across the country,” said John Brunton, Chairman, CEO and Executive Producer, Insight Productions. “I can guarantee you that this group of houseguests will be completely unique, completely Canadian and we cannot wait to open the doors of the Big Brother Canada house.”

Similar to the US format, Big Brother Canada will hand pick a diverse group of contestants to live in the Big Brother house outfitted wall to wall with cameras and microphones to capture their every move. Week to week the houseguests compete in a series of challenges and vote each other out until one claims victory and takes home the grand prize.
