New reality series to follow young Aboriginal hockey players

A new TV series is currently in production that will shine a light on aboriginal hockey players.

Hit The Ice, shooting in arenas in Ottawa-Gatineau, will focus on talented young players from northern reserves as they get the chance to train with important coaches.

Former NHL player and coach John Chabot will feature in the series, which is due to air next year.

“Sometimes these kids just get buried,” Chabot said.

“They get to the bantam age and they’re fantastic players, but then they’re playing men’s hockey, and then they get into the wrong things, they realize that their hockey thing’s over, and they just get pushed to the wrong direction.”

Florida Panthers defenceman Erik Gudbranson has signed on to feature as a guest coach in one episode.

“I think they’re going to have fun and they’re going to work hard, and hopefully they grasp the opportunity and take it very seriously,” Gudbranson said.
