Astral’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada) present the compelling, tragic and courageous story of the former NHL superstar in the documentary Theo Fleury: Playing With Fire.

From Pyramid Productions and producer/director Larry Day, this feature-length film debuts on Wednesday, May 9 at 9 pm ET/MT on The Movie Network and Movie Central, following its premiere at the 2012 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto.

Fleury’s success on the ice – a Stanley Cup in his rookie season with the Calgary Flames, Olympic Gold for Team Canada and amassing over 1,000 points in his NHL career – was overshadowed later by a string of scandalous headlines that painted a picture of a troubled soul.

While trying to dull the pain of a terrible childhood secret, he betrayed people who loved him and threw millions away on booze, drugs, gambling and strippers.

In 2009, Theo Fleury and Kirstie McLellan Day wrote Playing With Fire, revealing that, as a teen, Fleury had been sexually abused by his coach, Graham James. The book created a firestorm of publicity and went on to become a number-one bestseller.

The documentary, commissioned by The Movie Network and Movie Central, follows Fleury across North America as he promotes the book, competes in the figure-skating reality series Battle of the Blades and supports sexual abuse survivors.

Fleury offers unprecedented access to the film crew and shares his candid thoughts as he confronts the triumphs and transgressions of his past. He is a walking contradiction – a mercurial, charismatic, outspoken character, at times funny, at times tragic but always fascinating.
