CBC has announced its list of renewals for the new season of television and there are a few noticeable absentees.

Returning series include Dragons’ Den, Republic of Dyle, The Rick Mercer Report and Heartland.

New shows that have been announced include reality series called Over the Rainbow that will find the new Dorothy for the stage production of The Wizard of Oz. The show is based on a UK version featuring none other than Andrew Lloyd Webber on the judging panel.

Murdoch Mysteries has been acquired by CBC from Citytv, after the latter decided not to renew the crime series.

Absent from the list of renewals include Michael Tuesdays & Thursdays, Cover Me Canada and Battle of the Blades.

“We have put Battle of the Blades officially on a hiatus and we hope that we can, if financial circumstances improve, we can work with Insight Productions on bringing Battle of the Blades back,” said Julie Bristow, CBC head of scripted programming.

“CBC Television’s commitment to developing entertaining, engaging Canadian programming was rewarded with record ratings last season,” said Christine Wilson, executive director of content planning said in a press release.

“Despite financial challenges, the strength of those returning favourites combined with exciting new titles is setting the stage for an outstanding 2012-13 season.”
