From America's Next Top Model to the army

A former America’s Next Top Model contestant has traded the catwalk for the battle field, enlisting as an Israel Defence Force combat soldier.

Esther Petrack, who was born in Jerusalem to a religious family, finished in seventh place in the 2012 season of the reality modelling show.

She moved to the US when she was sixteen and became the first religious Jewish girl to compete on the Tyra Banks-hosted show.

When she enlisted, Petrack insisted on the combat position of tank instructor rather than a position in administration.

“I wanted to do something I could never do in my post-army life. Tank instructor is unlike any civilian job—it’s physical, but also intellectually and mentally challenging,” she said.
