Global News and Shaw Multicultural Channel announced today that broadcast veteran Carol Wang will anchor Global National Mandarin, and journalist Frank Qi will assume duties as the newscast’s Correspondent.
The 30-minute Mandarin-language newscast launches Monday, January 23 (Chinese New Year) on Shaw Multicultural Channel 116 in Vancouver, and Shaw Multicultural Channel 89 in Calgary.
Working closely with the Global National editorial team in Vancouver, Wang and Qi will provide Mandarin-speaking viewers with the day’s biggest national and international stories. Drawing on their wealth of knowledge and years forging relationships with key sources, Wang and Qi will present the stories that matter most to the Chinese community.

Carol Wang: Anchor – With over 12 years of television anchoring and reporting experience, Wang has cemented herself as a pillar within B.C.’s Chinese-speaking community. Wang began her broadcasting career as a television reporter and host in China’s Yunnan Province. Moving to Vancouver in 2001, Wang worked as a reporter and anchor for Fairchild Media’s Talentvision before hosting OMNI News: Mandarin Edition newscast in 2003. While at OMNI News, Wang covered the stories of most interest to the Chinese Community, including the recent extradition of alleged human smuggling kingpin Lai Changxing from Vancouver in July, 2011.
Frank Qi: Correspondent – An established and well-regarded journalist within the Chinese community, Qi has over 10 years experience working with Vancouver-based Chinese media. Graduating with a Master of Journalism from the University of British Columbia, Qi worked as a reporter and anchor for Fairchild TV, Vancouver before becoming the station’s Assignment Editor in 2007.
As part of the week-long Chinese New Year festivities set, Global National Mandarin will also feature coverage of Vancouver’s annual Chinese New Year Parade. Coverage of the Chinese New Year event will air Sunday, January 29th at 9:00 PM PT on Shaw TV Channel 4 and Shaw Multicultural Channel 116.
Global National Mandarin will air Monday-to-Friday at 7pm and 11:30pm PT on Shaw Multicultural Channel 116 in Vancouver, and at 10pm MT on Shaw Multicultural Channel 89 in Calgary.
