November 2011

They said it couldn’t be done. Ten seasons later, more viewers watch ETALK than any other entertainment newsmagazine on television – and the audiences continue to break records.

CTV looks back at the made-in-Canada success story with ETALK PRESENTS: 10 YEARS OF STARS, SCANDALS AND LIFE ON THE RED CARPET, an all-new one-hour special premiering Monday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. ET on CTV (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times).

In its tenth anniversary season, ETALK is experiencing its most-watched season ever, with increases in both total viewers (+14%) and the key A18-49 demo (+5%) nationally.

ETALK has also seen growth in total viewers in the key markets of Toronto (+8%), Calgary (+11%) and Vancouver (+17%), with Vancouver also seeing substantial growth in all three key demos (A18-34, +133%; A18-49, +100%; A25-54, +80%).

With an average audience of 601,000 viewers, nearly 1.9 million viewers check out ETALK each day, with one in five English Canadians (5.2 million) tuning in at least once a week.*

In addition to the 10th Anniversary special, ETALK fans will have six additional celebrity fuelled specials to keep their entertainment fires burning this holiday season (see details below).

In ETALK PRESENTS: 10 YEARS OF STARS, SCANDALS AND LIFE ON THE RED CARPET, anchors Ben Mulroney and Tanya Kim, along with reporters Danielle McGimsie, Traci Melchor, Lainey and Susie Wall, reflect on how this little-show-that-could began.

The special features clips from their first interviews and most memorable moments, to breaking celebrity news and the program’s support of Canadian artists and our homegrown entertainment industry. The story is told by the hosts themselves, who reflect on what’s to come for the venerable Canadian series.

“Starting in 2001, ETALK set the benchmark for entertainment news in Canada, and we couldn’t be more pleased by the growth we’ve continued to experience during our tenth anniversary season,” said Morley Nirenberg, Director of Production/Executive Producer, ETALK. “From our new set, HD launch and glamorous TIFF coverage in September to a fabulous fall full of ETALK exclusives and juicy star scandals, Canadian viewers continue to choose ETALK for their entertainment news from our backyard and around the world.”

As Canada’s #1 most-watched entertainment newsmagazine, ETALK bests U.S. stalwart ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT (535,000) by 12%, and delivers more than one-and-a-half times the audience of its Canadian competition ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT CANADA (353,000).

In the past two-and-a-half weeks** alone, ETALK has seen growth of 13% (669,000) with total viewers compared to the first seven weeks of the season, and has achieved three of its Top 7 highest-rated episodes ever. On Wednesday, Nov. 23, ETALK attracted a season-high audience, and its second highest audience ever***, with almost 900,000 viewers, up 49% over its average season audience and with dramatic increases in all key demos (A18-34, +144%; A18-49, +79%; A25-54, +46%).

The team listens to harrowing tales of run-ins with Bigfoot before generating reconstructions of the encounters to judge their plausibility or dismiss them as hoaxes. Then, outfitted with the latest technology, including night-vision and infrared cameras, the team sets out on exhilarating and eerie investigations where any broken branch or peculiar noise could mean a Sasquatch is lurking nearby.

PIT BOSS MARATHON (8×60)

Saturday, December 31 at 6 p.m. ET – 2 a.m. ET (3 p.m. – 11 p.m. PT)

Rossi has lofty ideas but is armed with a tough, no-nonsense attitude and an entertainment rolodex to help his cause – to rescue and rehabilitate pit bulls and place these “underdogs” in loving, nurturing homes. Joining forces with Rossi to help with his mission are his three employees and fellow little people who have the biggest hearts for dogs that are often larger than they are. Knowing full well what it’s like to be judged, the foursome takes on the gargantuan task of rescuing dogs in need and raising awareness about the most misunderstood dog of all – the pit bull.

DINSOSAUR REVOLUTION MARATHON (4×60)

Sunday, January 1 at 7 p.m. ET – 11 p.m. ET (4 p.m. – 8 p.m. PT)

From 2012 to the land before time…DINOSAUR REVOLUTION combines the talent of the world’s best dinosaur illustrators and animators with the latest paleontological research.   Presented with sparse narration and the latest cutting-edge animation and computer generated storytelling techniques, this four-hour New Years Day marathon features never-before-seen intimate behaviors to illustrate the extraordinary life of dinosaurs. A host of new behaviors are featured throughout, including exotic mating dances, the inner workings of T-Rex’s nuclear family and new creatures like a Jurassic flying squirrel and frogs so big they could eat dinosaurs.

Sparks are gonna fly!  Paul Teutul, Senior; and Paul Teutul, Junior, are about to go head to head – or helmet to helmet – as they put their personal issues aside and get down to business. The two-part chopper challenge, AMERICAN CHOPPER LIVE: THE BUILD-OFF airs Mon., Dec. 5 at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT (two hours, recorded earlier in the evening) and Tues., Dec. 6 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT (one hour, LIVE) on Discovery Channel from Las Vegas.

But it’s not just the Teutuls who will be putting their skills and their ego on the line. Jesse James – who made his television debut on Discovery Channel – will return to the network for the first time since 2006 to take on the Teutuls. James will be joining the father and son in his attempt to prove that one doesn’t need the surname “Teutul” to win the title of master bike builder.

Jesse James and the Teutuls previously shared time on the network with their own hit series – MONSTER GARAGE and AMERICAN CHOPPER, respectively – but now, these combustible characters will share the same stage for the first time. The fierce competition and live results special will test the breaking points of the Teutuls family feud and Jesse James’ notoriously hot temper.

Coming on the heels of AMERICAN CHOPPER’s return to Discovery Channel last year with the new SENIOR VS JUNIOR spin, the veteran show will take its success to new heights with its first LIVE event. On Monday, the first night of this two-part event, see the teams build extraordinarily cool new bikes. Then on Tuesday, Night 2, AMERICAN CHOPPER LIVE: THE BUILD-OFF will air LIVE, straight from the Strip in downtown Las Vegas, NV. What better place than Sin City to crown the winner of this unique bike building competition?

Will Senior’s years of experience give him the edge? Will Junior’s younger outlook lead him to victory? Or will wild card Jesse James wipe the floor with the two of them?
