Family Channel launches What's Up, Stand UP! campaign for Bullying Awareness Week

Family Channel goes behind the news desk this fall as it prepares for the ninth-annual Bullying Awareness Week.

From November 14-20 Family’s campaign, this year named What’s Up, Stand UP!, will focus on the important issue of bullying through a week of special programming, online chats with Family stars and trained counselors as well as three Stand UP! in-school rallies.

Family.ca is now accepting entries for students to win a rally for their school.

What’s Up, Stand UP! will see the annual weeklong campaign kick off on Monday, November 14 with an evening of reports, interviews and special episodes all anchored by the cast of Family’s What’s Up, Warthogs!

From 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, the West Hills High news desk team will introduce special bullying-themed episodes of Family shows such as Wingin’ It, Good Luck Charlie and Wizards of Waverly Place along with exclusive interviews with Family stars who have experienced bullying first hand.

The evening will also feature reports that highlight resources to help viewers that may be affected by bullying and the broadcast premiere of the latest music video from pop sensation Tyler Medeiros who has performed a song specifically for this year’s campaign.

Also entitled, “What’s Up, Stand UP!,” the song was made available for streaming on Family.ca earlier today.

“I am always moved by the overwhelming support Bullying Awareness Week receives from our Family stars, as well as the kids who enthusiastically participate and see the importance in bullying prevention in their communities,” said Kate Dickson, Communications Manager, Astral Kids. “The passion and dedication to make a difference from our actors, musical guests and our experienced partners at PREVNet position us for another successful campaign where we can connect with students, teachers and parents across Canada and encourage them to stand up and put an end to bullying.”

“I’m honoured to be involved in this important campaign because this is a cause that hits really close to home,” said performer Tyler Medeiros. “Knowing firsthand what it’s like to deal with bullying, I hope my song inspires students across the country to stand up and strive to make a difference in themselves and their communities.”

An integral part of the Bullying Awareness Week campaign, Family will take the message of bullying prevention into Canadian schools with three Stand UP! rallies. Featuring Family stars and a discussion led by a representative from national organization PREVNet, students can enter to win a rally at Family.ca by submitting a report (text, video or audio) explaining how they Stand UP! to bullying in their community. The contest runs until 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, October 7.

Those interested in the What’s Up, Stand UP! campaign can visit Family.ca to listen to Tyler’s song and learn more about Bullying Awareness Week. Bullying prevention resources for kids and educators are available for download and students can enter to win a Stand UP! rally at their school. Also on Family.ca, kids can take part in an anonymous online chat about bullying with Family stars and qualified counselors from PREVNet and Kids Help Phone. The chats will occur on Tuesday, November 15 and Thursday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Family Channel co-founded Bullying Awareness Week in 2003 and developed the Stand UP! campaign in association with PREVNet (Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network), a national network of Canadian researchers, community organizations and governments committed to ending bullying and promoting positive relationships.
