The remaining four teams square off for a wild pop challenge that involves balancing eggs, and the losing team has to leave the ranch for the week and work with a limited budget to purchase what items they’ll need most. Trainer Bob Harper takes his contestants to an inner-city school, where they energize the students with a fun workout and talk about the importance of fitness. Then all of the contestants go on a huge Easter egg hunt for 5,000 eggs, including a Golden Egg that comes with a very coveted prize. Finally, one player reaches a milestone at the weigh-in before another contestant is sent hopping.

With the upcoming Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April sure to be the biggest worldwide media event of the year, CHASING THE ROYALS: The Media & the Monarchy, airing on CBC Television Doc Zone on Thursday, March 31 at 9 pm, takes a timely and uncompromising look at another kind of marriage: the love-hate relationship between the media and the monarchy.

Gemini Award-winning Montreal filmmaker John Curtin, who made the highly-rated After Elizabeth II: Monarchy in Peril for CBC Television last year, returns to the subject of the public’s fascination with all things royal in this film.

“The monarchy and the media are like an unhappily married couple who are constantly feuding but can’t afford to divorce,” says Curtin. “For better or for worse, they’re together forever.”

The royals star in Britain’s longest running soap opera. Nothing sells newspapers like a royal scoop, so British journalists are always looking for new ways of getting one. They sneak into the Windsor’s palaces, hack their voice mail and trap them with sting operations. In the hunt for scoops, the Royals are the foxes and the media are the hounds.

Resenting the intrusions into their private lives, the royals would prefer to limit their public exposure to carefully stage-managed appearances……like Royal weddings, for instance.  They cannot retreat from the public without alienating it, so they are obliged to court the media they detest, sometimes, as detailed in CHASING THE ROYALS, with disastrous results.

To chronicle the weird, sometimes hilarious media-monarchy relationship first-hand, filmmaker Curtin travelled to the UK to talk to some of the foremost royal-watchers and film paparrazi on the chase. He tagged along with a herd of Royal-watching British and Canadian reporters as they accompanied Queen Elizabeth and her entourage during last summer’s Royal Visit to Canada. And he travels to Calgary to get the lowdown on the media’s lurid reporting of an evening encounter between Prince Harry and bartender Cherie Cymbalisty.

CHASING THE ROYALS chronicles the frenzied, comical and often nasty relationship between the royals and the “rat pack” chasing them.

CHASING THE ROYALS is the second half of a back-to-back double bill about the British monarchy CBC Television has scheduled the evening of March 31, and will be preceded by another new documentary, Marketing the Monarchy, at 8 pm.

Following the CBC TV Main Network premiere on Thursday, March 31 at 9 pm, CHASING THE ROYALS will get an additional showing on CBC sister network, CBC News Network, on Friday, April 1 at 10 pm ET/PT.

CHASING THE ROYALS is written, directed, edited and produced by Gemini Award winning filmmaker and journalist John Curtin. Curtin has more than 25 years of experience in television, radio and print. The Montreal-based, trilingual (English, French, German) Curtin has freelanced for The New York Times and reported from abroad for CBC and National Public Radio. He has produced and directed seventeen one-hour documentaries which have been broadcast on the CBC, CTV, BBC, PBS, ARD, NHK, National Geographic, ARTE,  Discovery Channel and others.  They include AFTER ELIZABETH II: Monarchy in Peril; TO HELL WITH MANNERS: The Decline of Civility; FLY ME TO THE MOON: Fateful Attraction; A SONG FOR AFRICA; DANGEROUS WHEN PROVOKED; OUR GRIEVING HEARTS; FLIRTING WITH THE OPPOSITION; ISLAM BEHIND BARS; PASSION BEFORE REASON: Margaret Trudeau’s Story, and many others.

CHASING THE ROYALS is narrated by Ann-Marie MacDonald. For CBC’s Independent Documentary Unit: Linda Laughlin, Senior Producer; Michael Claydon, Area Executive Producer. Mark Starowicz is Executive Director, Documentary Programming.
