Chinese New Year Movie Presentation: All’s Well, Ends Well Too 2010: Saturday, February 5 at 8pm ET/MT (11pm PT)

After spending a decade honing her ceremonial skills in the Midland, Princess Pearl (Angela Yeung Wing) of Flowerland begins her journey home. Along the way she meets General Wing (Ronald Cheng), a strong leader in the Midland Army, who joins her on her travels. An unexpected series of events turns this trip upside down when General Wing rescues a young woman from taking her own life. When the three travelers are later attacked by a gang of pirates Princess Pearl falls overboard and suffers from amnesia. General Wing knows that Princess Pearl is still alive and he won’t rests until his true love is back in his arms.

A mainland Chinese Television event, the CCTV Beijing Chinese New Year Gala will feature various dramatic and comedic skits as well as song and dance performances direct from Beijing.

Alongside some of his funniest countrymen and women, Chinese comedy megastar Jiang Kun will be featured on stage in Toronto, combining hilarious Xiangsheng (two-performer comedy ‘crosstalk’) in Mandarin, non-verbal slapstick physical comedy, masterful sound-effects, eye-popping shadow puppetry, mesmerizing comedy magic and stunning musical and dance performances.

Chinese New Year Movie Presentation: 72 Tenants of Prosperity: Saturday, February 12 at 8pm ET/MT (11pm PT)

Back in the 1970s, Ha Kung (Eric Tsang) and Shek Kin (Jacky Cheung) prevented a greedy pair of slumlords (Lam Ka-Tung and Charmaine Sheh) from evicting 72 destitute tenants and saved a young woman named Pinky (Anita Yuen) from entering into an arranged marriage. Torn between the two men who both declared their love for her, Pinky flipped a coin to determine who she would marry and Ha won. In the years that followed, the goodwill between Ha and Shek gradually eroded and the two former brothers grew into sworn enemies. Forty years later, the two rivals are both working in Mongkok, trying to corner the electronics market as the tenants they once stood up for observe the fierce competition from afar.

 

Grand Festive Music Concert 2011: Saturday, February 12 at 10pm ET/MT (8pm PT)

Broadcasted from the Concert Hall of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the concert will feature the China National Symphony Orchestra, featuring internationally renowned artistic director, Mr. Chen Zuohuang and the outstanding Mr. Lu Jia as the conductor.

Global’s exclusive broadcast of the 2011 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards deserves an award of its own.  

Not only did it put a lock on the country (Ind 2+) but it experienced meteoric growth since the first Global broadcast in 2010, indicating the continuing rise in importance of the SAG Awards.

 

Highlights include:

· Year to year nationally, 54% increase (Ind 2+) and a 95% increase in the key A18-49 demo

· Global owned Sunday night prime time (8pm-11pm, Ind 2+), beating CTV by 38% and Citytv by 70%

· Global’s broadcast of the SAG Awards also won the night in the key markets of Toronto and Vancouver (A18-49)

· Year to year, Toronto was up 67% (A18-49) and Vancouver was up 20% (A18-49)

 

A little more than halfway through awards season, Global anticipates another strong showing when it broadcasts The GRAMMY Awards on Sunday, February 13, which will be preceded by ET Canada’s Red Carpet Special.

CTV Inc. today announced it has completed installation of an over-the-air (OTA) High Definition transmitter in Montréal. CTV becomes Canada’s only broadcaster to have HD transmitters in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montréal. 

CTV Montréal’s leading lineup of top-rated programming – from THE BIG BANG THEORY, AMERICAN IDOL, and THE MENTALIST to FLASHPOINT and the upcoming SUPER BOWL XLV – is now available to viewers with an HD-capable television equipped with a digital tuner and antenna on Channel 12.1 (RF channel 51).

“Viewers receiving CTV over-the-air can now get Montréal’s most-watched programs in High Definition,” said Don Bastien, Senior Vice-President and General Manager, CTV Montréal. “As Montréal’s #1 English-language television station, we are enormously proud to deliver this service to our viewers.”

Today’s announcement represents the latest development in the multi-stage rollout of CTV Inc.’s Canadian HD strategy. CTV was the first national conventional broadcaster to transmit over-the-air in High Definition when its first HD transmitters began operating in Toronto and Vancouver in 2005. CTV was also the first national broadcaster to transmit a feed in High Definition when CTV HD East debuted in 2003, followed by CTV HD West in 2004.

It’s the biggest party on the biggest sports stage in North America and it’s coming to CTV on Sunday, as CTV has exclusive Canadian coverage of SUPER BOWL XLV featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the Green Bay Packers in the ultimate fight for the Vince Lombardi trophy.

CTV’s coverage of SUPER BOWL XLV airs nationally in High Definition on February 6 beginning at 12 noon ET with six hours of pre-game programming on SUPER BOWL Sunday (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times). 

TSN kicks off coverage of SUPER BOWL XLV with a four-hour championship edition of SUNDAY NFL COUNTDOWN at 10 a.m. ET, while RDS’s coverage of the big game begins at 5:30 p.m. ET.

SUPER BOWL Sunday on CTV concludes with the shocking season finale of the international hit series FLASHPOINT immediately following SUPER BOWL XLV at 10 p.m. ET. In the gripping season three cliff-hanger episode, Canada’s favourite TV cop unit is threatened like never before, as the fate of Team One and the life of one of the team’s own hang in the balance.

Calling the SUPER BOWL are veteran NFL broadcaster Joe Buck and analyst and three-time SUPER BOWL champion Troy Aikman from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX. The SUPER BOWL halftime show, sponsored in Canada by Pepsico, features the Grammy Award-winning pop group Black Eyed Peas, while pop superstar Christina Aguilera sings the national anthem prior to kick-off.

Once again, CTV is on pace to sell out all available advertising time for one of the biggest events of the broadcast season. Labatt and Hyundai have returned as major sponsors of the SUPER BOWL broadcast on CTV with Nissan and Chevrolet also becoming major sponsors this year. Many of the advertisers have confirmed that they will debut new campaigns on CTV during the SUPER BOWL broadcast.

Last year’s SUPER BOWL broadcast was watched by more than 6.3 million viewers on CTV.

In the most-coveted timeslot in prime time television, CTV’s international hit series FLASHPOINT concludes its third season with a shocking season finale that has Team One grappling with life and death choices and tough decisions. The gripping episode guest stars renowned actor Victor Garber (ALIAS, ELI STONE) as an elite military psychologist who sets his sights on destroying Team One by exposing deep secrets and faults amongst the top cop unit.

Citytv announced today the addition of two local programs to its schedule in Calgary and Toronto. This Spring, Citytv in Calgary will broadcast a new half-hour suppertime program in Calgary and CityNews will return to weekends on Citytv in Toronto. 

The new untitled 30-minute show in Calgary will air weekdays Monday to Friday. The province-wide search for its new local host created a buzz in the industry that lead to today’s early announcement about the new program. 

“Due to competitive reasons we can’t reveal too much about the show at this time, except that it will be hosted by a personality well-known in Calgary and throughout most of Alberta,” commented Jamie Haggarty, Executive Vice-President, Television Operations, Rogers Media Television. “We identified an opportunity to engage and interact with Calgarians daily.” 

The return of CityNews at six and eleven on weekends in Toronto is another welcomed announcement for Citytv viewers. Anchors of the weekend news will be announced shortly before the program returns to the airwaves in early March.
