In classic W5 investigative style, Canada’s #1 documentary program joins forces with a police detective determined to bring a hard-to-catch career criminal who preys on senior citizens to justice.

In “Cross Canada Con,” W5’s Victor Malarek takes viewers inside the pursuit of a slippery swindler who has made a career of fraud – most recently hitting retirement homes and victimizing elderly tenants while posing as a building manager or a relative.

The all-new episode premieres Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. ET on CTV. Also in this episode, W5 targets the tax man to find out what happens when runaway tax audits result in devastating financial ruin for ordinary Canadians.

W5 repeats Sunday, Feb. 6 at 12 noon on CP24, and Monday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery, and then on demand on the CTV News Video Player at CTV.ca (visit CTV.ca for local listings).

Detective John Dunlop looks like he’s out of central casting from CSI. But he’s a real cop and has been catching bad guys for more than 20 years as a Toronto Police detective. In 2009, Dunlop was called to investigate the robbery of an 81-year-old woman at her senior’s building. To the frustration of the police and the victims, although caught several times on security video, the fraudster continued to elude arrest.

W5 follows the case as Dunlop gets a break, when a fellow cop reveals that a fraud squad investigation dating back to 1999 involved a suspect named Richard Rupert. Dunlop is committed to taking down the wily and elusive Rupert, a man with no job, no family, no address, no credit cards, or paper trail – once and for all. It is a pursuit that W5 – the truly national current affairs program – follows across Canada to Alberta and British Columbia.

In its second story, W5 continues its in-depth investigation of the Canada Revenue Agency with all-new cases and all-new tax horror stories.

“After we looked into the taxman out-of-control last season (in “A Taxing Problem”) we received an avalanche of viewer mail, with many more chilling stories from Canadians complaining of the CRA’s insensitivity and unaccountability,” said Anton Koschany, Executive Producer, W5. “With such overwhelming response to our original story and new personal accounts of the CRA acting with impunity toward many Canadian taxpayers we decided to investigate these new cases.”

In “The Audit”, W5 follows the cases of Eli Humby and Chuck Martinello, caught up in seemingly-endless battles with the tax department that has ruined their investments, businesses, lives, and faith in the powerful government agency. W5 also seeks answers on behalf of Humby, Martinello and all taxpayers from Canada’s tax ombudsman and the federal minister responsible.

There are few occasions in history when it can be said that the actions of a few changed the destiny of not just a country, but of the world.

The 1940 Battle of Britain is one of those defining moments. Actor Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Star Wars) joins his brother Colin in THE REAL BATTLE OF BRITAIN to mark the 70th Anniversary of this historic event.

Premiering on Discovery World HD on Saturday, March 5 at 8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT, this 90-minute special revisits this famous chapter in Britain’s history and reveals the story of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Britain’s “finest hour.”

Colin is an RAF veteran of 20 years’ service; his brother Ewan is a hero of the big screen and fledgling pilot himself. Together they honour the heroes of 1940 both on the ground and in the air, bringing the story of the Battle of Britain to a new generation. During the special, Ewan is treated to a flying display by the only existing Hurricane in the world that actually flew during the Battle of Britain and is joined by RAF veteran Bob Foster who flew the Hurricane during the Battle 70 years ago. Then, Colin gives his brother the surprise of his life as Ewan gets to fly in a Spitfire over the White Cliffs of Dover. To learn to fly the iconic Spitfire, the men complete three days of training in a Tiger Moth.

As they fly historic planes, meet the veterans and explore the tactics and technology, Colin and Ewan discover the importance of the Battle and the surviving legacy of the 1940s’ campaign for the modern RAF. Together, they honour what is arguably the most important event in modern British history and the only aerial war in world history.
