At 157 metres long – almost the length of 1.5 football fields – DSV Skandi Arctic is a beast to manoeuvre. But it’s what happens beneath the hulking ship that’s truly amazing.

When the landmark Canadian series MIGHTY SHIPS returns, the fourth season dives in – quite literally – with an exploration of the extraordinary technology on a saturation dive ship that works to keep the divers safe doing the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Premiering Wednesday, February 23 at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT on Discovery Channel, this “high stakes, high seas, high drama” series offers exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the most extraordinary ships from around the world – from massive heavy cargo lifters and drug patrol vessels, to Arctic icebreakers.

Highlights from the first episodes of MIGHTY SHIPS 4 include:

MIGHTY SHIPS: “DSV Skandi Arctic”

Wednesday, February 23 at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT

MIGHTY SHIPS fourth season begins on the frontline of exploring Earth’s final frontier – the sea floor. DSV Skandi Arctic is a new breed of ship. A saturation dive support ship, this vessel is the mother ship for aquanauts who work hundreds of meters below the surface on jobs considered the most dangerous in the world. Christened in 2009, Skandi Arctic is 157 meters long and the saturation dive habitat that sits on her stern is both state of the art and borderline science fiction. Saturation divers are risk takers – adrenaline junkies at the pinnacle of the dive community. For 30 days, 24 divers live in the pressurized habitat that’s better suited for life on Mars. They dive 24/7 using diving bells to travel deep below the surface. Each time they dive, they put their lives at risk. If they lose Heliox, pressure, or the heat in their suits, they’re dead in seconds.  On deck, the job of Skandi Arctic’s 90-plus crew is to support the divers to get the job done. MIGHTY SHIPS is there to see why the stakes are so high and the job is so dangerous, how the technology is truly space age and the potential for disaster is omnipresent.

Wednesday, March 2 at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT

The incredible USCGC Bertholf is the first of eight Legend Class ships built for the U.S. Coast Guard. Bertholf is a multi-purpose frigate equipped with only the best and most advanced technology and weaponry. MIGHTY SHIPS joins Bertholf as she patrols the high seas, looking for drugs, weapons, human trafficking, as well as conducting traditional search-and-rescue missions. Bertholf’s advanced weapons systems reinforce the reality that this is a front-line warship. On patrol in the dangerous eastern Pacific off of Columbia, the young but dedicated crew carries out their primary mission – stemming the growth of illegal drug use and addiction by stopping drug shipments before they enter the country. MIGHTY SHIPS is onboard as the crew engages and catches real smugglers in pulse-pounding chases. It’s no wonder that the USCGC Bertholf’s motto is: “Legends Begin Here.”

MIGHTY SHIPS: “Beluga Bremen”

Wednesday, March 9 at 8 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT

Step aside Mike Tyson – and meet Beluga Bremen. A true heavy-weight champion, Bremen is the world’s first multipurpose heavy lift cargo carrier that can hoist more than 1,400 tons of weight. Bremen is the first of 16 ships in Beluga’s latest generation of super heavy lift P2 series carriers… the biggest, most powerful heavy lifters in the shipping world. Bremen’s very first job is to lift, transport and deliver two of the largest mining autoclaves ever built to a gold mine in the Dominican Republic.  Each one weighs in at an astronomical 820 tonnes!  It’s the heaviest cargo ever delivered to this Caribbean Island. MIGHTY SHIPS tells the unique story of this challenging voyage full of firsts, starting in  Malaysia where Bremen picks up her cargo. Next, she docks in the busiest port on Earth, Shanghai, to pick up another heavy load. And finally, Bremen crosses the Pacific Ocean and navigates the busiest, most famous canal in the world, the Panama Canal – all before her real job even begins!

Also this season on MIGHTY SHIPS, hop into the world’s hot zones with “USNS Robert E. Peary”, a T-AKE 5 supply ship, built for 21st century warfare. Join Peary on active deployment in the Gulf of Aden, where re-supplying a fleet of 20 warships is the key element in the chase and capture of the globe’s most notorious modern pirates (March 16). Next, explore life aboard the world’s biggest ferry, “Stena Britannica,” a car carrier, passenger ferry, cargo transport and cruise ship all rolled into one. Catch up with Britannica as she enters active service on the busiest ferry route in the world, between Holland and England (March 23). And finally this season, go aboard “CCGS Amundsen,” a research icebreaker whose job is to battle Arctic extremes to understand just how global warming is radically changing life in the high Arctic. Amundsen’s crew of mariners and scientists study the implications of unprecedented climactic changes by going where no ship has gone before – through the historic and dangerous Northwest Passage (March 30).

MIGHTY SHIPS is produced by Exploration Production Inc. (EPI) in association with Discovery Channel Canada.

Logo announced today that it has acquired the rights to air the second season of MTV Canada’s cult hit talk show, “1 girl 5 gays.”

Not for the bashful or faint at heart, “1 girl 5 gays” pushes the envelope in a series of quick fire, roundtable question and answer sessions with the namesake “1 girl and 5 gays” that would make most people blush.

In this “Hot Topics for 20-Somethings,” our adorable straight girl host throws out outrageous questions of sex, love and life to a rotating panel of take-no-prisoners and tell-it-like-it-is gay boys.

Not your typical late-night “interview couch,” think of it as an adult version of “Truth or Dare,” without the dares.

Largely unedited for content and definitely not safe for daytime, “1 girl 5 gays” will continue to anchor Logo’s weeknight, late-night lineup where the first season increased ratings in its Midnight time slot +55% compared to the network’s Q4 2010 average for that time period.

The first of the second season’s 40 episodes premieres on Monday, February 7th at Midnight.

“‘1 girl 5 gays’ has been a sleeper hit for Logo,” said Marc Leonard, Senior Vice-President of Multiplatform Programming, Logo.  “Without much initial fanfare, and after much pleading from fans of the show on AfterElton.com, it was added to our schedule and quickly became one of the most tweeted and talked about shows on the network.  We know our viewers can’t wait to see what boundaries will be pushed in the second season, and we’re all just a little bit scared.”

“1 girl 5 gays” brings together host Aliya-Jasmine Sovani with a panel of five of her best gay friends for frank, funny, and always fierce discussions on sex and relationships.  The alternating group of gay men, chosen for their sass, individuality, and confidence, never shy away from outrageous or taboo subject matters.  Each member of the rotating panel is smarter, funnier and more honest than the next, and the laugh-riot that ensues is more like late night smack-talking with your college besties than your typical 11pm strip.  “1 girl 5 gays” – she asks, and they do tell.

“1 girl 5 gays” is produced by Garrett Wintrip with Alex Sopinka as Executive Producer and Pam De Montmorency as Supervising Producer.  Mark McInnis is Vice President of Production, Much MTV Group and Brad Schwartz is Senior Vice President and General Manager, Much MTV Group.  Bob McLaughlin is Senior Vice President, Production, CTV and Susanne Boyce is President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc.

Can an office that works together sing together? Global posed the question last summer when it announced Canada Sings!, a truly original series that challenged Canadians to form workplace glee clubs and battle it out in competition for their charity of choice. The teams have been selected and routines decided upon, so now the hard work begins.

“Imagine trying to dance and sing with the person that you normally work with,” said Barb Williams, SVP, Content, Shaw Media. “These people are putting their hearts and souls into this so there’s no doubt we’re going to see some fireworks leading up to the final showdowns.”

Over the next few weeks, cameras will be rolling to capture every second as each team struggles to transition from co-workers to cast members – from the unsteady days of rehearsal to the polished performances. Luckily the newly formed glee clubs will be assisted by world class choreographers Christian Vincent (Dance Captain for Madonna’s “Drowned World Tour”) and Kelly Konno (Michael Bublé’s “Feeling Good” music video) as well as professional vocal coaches Scott Henderson (founding member of Juno®-nominated R&B group, The EarthTONES) and Sharron Matthews (“The Music Man,” “Hairspray: The Movie”).

“We’re so excited about Canada Sings!” said John Brunton, Executive Producer & President of Insight Production Company Ltd. “This original Insight format has captured the attention and enthusiasm of workplaces from coast to coast. From funeral homes to zoos to huge corporations like Air Canada, everybody wants their 15 minutes of fame and everyone wants to be a rock star. Canada Sings! will give them that chance.”

The workplace glee clubs that are gearing up to hone their skills include:

Air Canada

Boiler House Restaurant

Eric Hamber Secondary School

Good Life Fitness

Hamilton Police

Just Energy

Lone Wolf Real Estate Technologies

Scarborough General Hospital

The Keg

Toronto Fire Department

Complete details for Canada Sings! including glee club members, show host, celebrity judges and broadcast date will be announced in the coming months.

Canada Sings! is created by Insight Productions for Shaw Media.
