Global BC News Hour wins Gemini for Best Local Newscast

Global News’ commitment to quality news reporting was highlighted last night at the 25th Annual Gemini Awards with two wins, including awards for Best Local Newscast, Large Market for Global BC’s News Hour, and Best News Information Series for Global National’s 2009 Everyday Hero Special. The Awards were held at the Kool Haus in Toronto, at which Global News was nominated in six categories.

“These awards are a testament to all the hard work that goes into every Global newscast,” says Troy Reeb, Senior Vice-President of News and Current Affairs. “They recognize the dedication and high level of professionalism exemplified by our entire team, and represent our continued determination to provide Canadians with the most dynamic and innovative news programming possible.”

The Best Local Newscast, Large Market Gemini Award win solidifies Global BC’s News Hour position as the top newscast of its kind in the country. This win further acknowledges Global BC’s News Hour’s position as B.C.’s most watched nightly newscast as well as the highest rated local newscast in the country. Having just celebrated its 50th anniversary, this is the first Gemini Award win for Global BC, and for its flagship News Hour newscast.

The Best News Information Series award highlights Global National’s work on its 2009 Everyday Hero Special. Airing on Christmas Day, the special profiled 32 individuals who had made a significant and meaningful contribution to their local communities. Viewers were then given the opportunity to their favourite Everyday Heroes at Globalnational.com, with the top four being announced during the broadcast.

Global National airs at 5:30pm nationally; 6:30pm in the Maritimes; and 7:30pm in Newfoundland on NTV.

Global BC’s News Hour airs at 6:00pm PST

Since launching over nine years ago, Global National has won five Gemini Awards, with the combined Global News team having won eight. Global National has received a total of 24 nominations since 2001.
