Global’s explosive summer schedule continues to captivate Canadians with four of the Top 5 shows in the country.

Once again proving it is the destination for summertime viewing, the network also claims six out of the Top 10 and 10 out of the Top 20 programs in Canada. Dominating the rankings in the key Adults 18-49 demographic, the network has a stronghold on the ratings each week.

Bolstered by the success of Canada’s #1 New Drama Rookie Blue, scandalous reality fave Big Brother and smash hit Wipeout, Global’s steamy summer slate is outperforming its competitors nationally and across all major markets.

“It’s a great testament to our lineup and our loyal viewers to have maintained such strength in audience engagement this summer,” said Barbara Williams, Executive Vice-President, Content, Canwest Broadcasting. “The numbers clearly indicate Canadians are choosing to tune in to Global night after night, week after week.”

In the major markets, Global also claims more than half of the Top 10 spots in Calgary (seven) and Vancouver (six). In particular, homegrown drama Rookie Blue tops the rankings as the #1 program in Vancouver. Hot on the heels of its early renewal, the series continues its smoking hot performance, and is one of the country’s Top 5 programs.

In addition to the unprecedented success of this hit original series, a range of programs across the schedule, including new episodes of the critically-acclaimed Lie to Me and encore presentations of The Simpsons and Family Guy, have entertained Canadians this summer.

Their stories may be different, but their motive is always the same: to stay out of prison and live life on the run.

After they’ve evaded justice for years – even decades – go inside the minds and motives of 13 slippery criminals and find out why they were so tough for authorities to track down. Launching on Discovery’s gripping new channel Investigation Discovery, the 13-part series I (ALMOST) GOT AWAY WITH IT premieres Friday, September 3 at 10 p.m. ET/11 p.m. PT.

From removing their own fingerprints to identity theft, there’s nothing these guys won’t do to get away! With the best and the brightest in law enforcement after them, the now-captured inmates reveal first hand where they found shelter, how they changed their identities and how they (almost) got away with it.

How did these fugitives escape capture? Find out when I (ALMOST) GOT AWAY WITH IT premieres Sept., 3 on Investigation Discovery.

Using their families, fake identification and violence to avoid capture, I (ALMOST) GOT AWAY WITH IT features criminals – from bank robbers, murderers and drug dealers – so ruthless and scheming that they fleetingly managed to avoid being locked up. Using all means necessary to capture these renegade felons, law enforcement officers use both determination and ingenuity to bring each case to justice.

The MTV Canada original production 1 GIRL 5 GAYS has been picked up in the U.S. by Logo, the network for gays, lesbians and their families and friends owned by MTV Networks.

Season 1 of the series is slated to have its U.S. premiere in October, 2010.  1 GIRL 5 GAYS is the third original production from MTV Canada to be seen in the U.S. Both THE AFTER SHOW, which deconstructed pop culture and PEAK SEASON, a Whistler-based documentary series, have proven to be hits with viewers south of the border.

1 GIRL 5 GAYS brings together host Aliya-Jasmine (AJ) Sovani with a panel of five gay men for frank, funny, and sometimes fierce discussions on sex and relationships. The alternating group of gay men, chosen for their honesty, individuality, and confidence, never shy away from outrageous or taboo subject matters. Discussions revolve around everything from masturbation, Madonna, and matrimony to family dinners, embarrassing erections, and favourite underwear.

“We jumped at the chance to give 1 Girl 5 Gays its U.S. premiere,” said Marc Leonard, Senior Vice-President of Multiplatform Programming, Logo. “Our jaws dropped (in a good way) for this bold show that addresses all the outrageous questions we ask ourselves about sex and relationships – well, not in the office of course…our HR people may read this.”

“1 GIRL 5 GAYS is a ground-breaking talk series that deals with sex and relationship issues in a smart, funny, unfiltered, and authentic manner,” said Brad Schwartz, Senior Vice-President, General Manager, Much MTV Group, CTV Inc. “The series pushes boundaries way past the point of controversial and all the way back again. We’re thrilled that American audiences will get a chance to see this sharp, trailblazing series and Logo is the perfect place for people to watch it.”

1 GIRL 5 GAYS premiered in Canada on MTV in October, 2009. New episodes air weekly on Fridays at 12 midnight ET. For more information and to watch past episodes, hit up www.mtv.ca/tvshows/1-girl-5-gays.

NBC has confirmed that The Office will lose the services of Steve Carell following the next season of the comedy.

Carell had hinted earlier in the year that when his contract expires next year he was thinking of ending his term as Michael Scott and now it has been confirmed.

NBC primetime entertainment president Angela Bromstad has said that Careel will continue on to the end of the upcoming seventh season but that’s it.

Bromstad said in a statement: “We’ve been lucky to have had him as long as we’ve had. These things happen when you have such a major movie star in a show.

“Not to diminish the departure of Steve, because that will impact the show, but we have tremendous faith in the writers and actors to keep it alive.”

There has been talk of another big-name star stepping in to take on the vacant lead role but at this stage that is just an idea.
