Love Letters on CBC

Sunday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m.

Hosted by Gordon Pinsent (Away from Her) and created by Peter Keleghan (18 to Life, The Newsroom) and Leah Pinsent (Made in Canada, More Tears), LOVE LETTERS is a performing arts special based on the 1989 Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Love Letters, by A.R. Gurney. The one-hour show, airing on CBC-TV, Sunday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m., features some of Canada’s most well-known real-life acting couples in an exploration of love and relationships.

The special includes excerpts from Gurney’s play performed by Keleghan and Leah Pinsent, along with Peter Donaldson (Emily of New Moon, Guys and Dolls – The Stratford Festival) and Sheila McCarthy (Little Mosque on the Prairie), Carlo Rota (Little Mosque on the Prairie, 24) and Nazneen Contractor (24, The Border), Colin Mochrie (Whose Line Is It Anyway, This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and Deb McGrath (Little Mosque on the Prairie) and Samantha Bee and Jason Jones (both of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart).

Leah Pinsent first saw the play Love Letters, co-starring her legendary acting couple parents, Gordon Pinsent and Charmion King, in Victoria, B.C. She later experienced the piece first-hand when she performed it with her husband, Peter Keleghan, at the Picton Theatre Festival.

The impetus for the television special grew from Pinsent’s and Keleghan’s love of the play, and their desire to do something different with it using a wealth of Canadian talent who are couples in real life. Soon, the couple decided that it would be interesting to film LOVE LETTERS on stage with various real-life couples performing the roles, and insert filmed interviews with each couple talking about their real experiences in love.

LOVE LETTERS is directed by Tim Southam (The Bay of Love and Sorrows, One Dead Indian, The Tale of Teeka), with production design by Sean Breaugh (MVP: The Secret Lives of Hockey Wives). It is produced by Triptych Media (Heyday!, The Tale of Teeka, Emotional Arithmetic), with executive producers Peter Keleghan and Leah Pinsent.
