Stratford's Caesar And Cleopatra Airs Boxing Day on CTV

Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s celebrated play CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA, starring the legendary Christopher Plummer, makes its broadcast premiere in high definition on Saturday, December 26 at 2 p.m. ET on CTV (visit to confirm local broadcast times). The acclaimed, two-hour Bravo! film is a fresh take on George Bernard Shaw’s classic play, giving viewers a humorous yet seductive comedy about the relationship between Caesar and Cleopatra

Also airing in high definition for the first time is the broadcast premiere of Bravo!’s NUREYEV, leading into CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA on Saturday, December 26 at 1 p.m. ET on CTV. The film presents fictionalized accounts of Nureyev’s life through dance and dramatic monologues. Starring Season 1 SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA winner Nico Archambault, NUREYEV uses original choreography to incorporate the memories of fictionalized characters, presenting a multi-faceted portrait of one of the seminal performing arts figures of our time.

Inspired by Stratford’s Artistic Director and Tony Award®-winner Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys), CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA features Plummer as Julius Caesar, and Nikki M. James (LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT) as Cleopatra, the enchanting teenaged queen of Roman-occupied Egypt. Their first encounter leads to a shift in history as Caesar teaches Cleopatra to overcome her timidity to become a determined player in the game of power politics.

CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA was hailed as a triumph by critics throughout Canada when it premiered on Bravo! earlier this year. Canadian Press said “Plummer wowed critics with his turn as strategist Julius Caesar, mentor to a teenage Cleopatra.” praised the presentation, saying “The production jumps off the screen, partly due to the multitude of cameras used to capture the performances, but mostly thanks to Plummer and James’ wonderful interpretation of Shaw’s humourous script.”

NUREYEV was also praised by critics when it premiered on Bravo! earlier this month. The Toronto Sun said “Every once in a while a TV show comes along that pleasantly surprises you with its uniqueness…Nureyev fits the category.” And The Toronto Star raved “Both director and star make one thing clear: the film is not a biopic. Archambault is not imitating Nureyev, but interpreting and paying tribute to him.”

Produced in association with Bravo!, through the Centre Stage Benefits, and Melbar Entertainment Group, CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA was filmed in 2008 before a live audience in Stratford, Ontario. Produced by Barry Avrich and executive produced by Christopher Plummer, Barry Avrich and Michael Levine, and directed for the screen by Shelagh O’Brien, the High Definition multi-camera production captures Plummer’s highly-praised portrayal of Julius Caesar and the captivating comedic drama of Shaw’s renowned play.
