Just For Laughs Returns To CBC

JUST FOR LAUGHS, the comedy experts, are turning up the laughs this season with the return of JUST FOR LAUGHS on CBC Television beginning Monday, September 28 at 9 p.m. In addition to the eight one hour episodes, there is the ever-popular New Year’s Eve “Best Of” show and a special: Just for Laughs Toronto: Ethnic All-Stars hosted by CBC’s own Shaun Majumder.  Over the regular season, guests include Whoopi Goldberg, John Cleese, Martin Short, Jim Gaffigan, Lewis Black, Louis C.K., Caroline Rhea and Bobcat Goldthwait, among many others.

Each episode features the top Gala performances from the 27th edition of the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. Side-splittingly funny performances by some of comedy’s most laugh-out-loud stars include a comedic melting pot of national and international artists:  Ireland’s favourite son of comedy Tommy Tiernan; festival fave and Scottish star Danny Bhoy and bombastic Brits Jimmy Carr, Mark Watson and Ross Noble. As well, there’s linguistic U.S. wunderkinds Improvised Shakespeare, idiosyncratic Irishman Jimeoin, Australian superstar Adam Hills and such quirky acts as the Irish sketch quintet Dead Cat Bounce. Canada makes a great showing in the series with acts including: Mike MacDonald, Deb DiGiovanni, Angelo Tsarouchas, Pete Zedlacher, Jon Dore and Gerry Dee.

This year JUST FOR LAUGHS is cranking the laugh-o-meter to 11 with featurettes of some of Canada’s favourite comedians in unlikely alternative-career situations as they are asked ‘What would you be doing if you weren’t a standup comic?’ See Pete Zedlacher try his hand as a professional UFC fighter (it’s not pretty); ogle as Deb DiGiovanni goes back to her fine-art roots with a live male nude model; salivate as big man Angelo Tsarouchas toils over the grill as a short-order cook at a lunch counter and try to account for the fact that Mark Forward could have been a bank teller.

Premiere episode – Monday, September 28 at 9:00 p.m.

The premiere episode will feature performances by Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Gaffigan, Louis C.K., Pete Zedlacher, Adam Hills and more!

Filmed live at the Winter Garden Theatre during the 2009 Festival, join Shaun Majumder, of CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes, for an all-ethnic evening of hilarity featuring: half-Korean, half-Irish Steve Byrne’s special blend of comedy; Jewish-American comedy club pro Rachel Feinstein; BET and CNN’s Godfrey and Toronto’s own original wise guy Frank Spadone.
