June 2009

The following changes and additions have been made to Citytv’s exciting summer line up:

The Goode Family
Moved to Wednesdays at 8 pm ET/PT (7pm CT/ 9pm MT)
When it comes to living life by the rules the Goodes are more than just a little over the top! Gerald (Mike Judge, King of the Hill), Helen (Nancy Carell, The Office), Ubuntu (Dave Herman, King of the Hill) and Bliss (Linda Cardellini, ER) – are a family obsessed with doing the “right” thing environmentally, politically and socially. Every move is carefully checked against their self imposed social conscience and often results in unintended comic consequences. From their hybrid car that they only use in emergencies because it’s bad for the environment, to their beloved dog Che who despite being raised vegan satisfies his meat cravings by devouring neighbourhood pets, to the lengths to which Gerald and Helen will go to relate to their children, the Goodes live life by the best of intentions. While their choices don’t always pay off, they always leave you rooting for them. The Goode Family was created, written and executive produced by Mike Judge (King of the Hill), David Krinsky and John Altschuler (Blades of Glory; King of the Hill).

Be prepared to laugh, cringe, and gasp with shock, as  comic thresholds shatter on Saturday, June 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT when THE COMEDIANS OF COMEDY: LIVE AT THE TROUBADOUR takes over The Comedy Network. The humour is always fresh and funny as headliners Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Zach Galifianakis and Maria Bamford share their distinctive brand of comedy. Split into two specials, Part 2 premieres Saturday, June 20 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. As part of The Comedy Network’s SATURDAY NIGHT STAND-UP series, THE COMEDIANS OF COMEDY are available uncensored and on demand at thecomedynetwork.ca.

Filmed live at Los Angeles’ famed Troubadour,  Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Zach Galifianakis and Maria Bamford ― known collectively as the Comedians of Comedy ― join 11 other alt comics for an evening of side-splitting humour. With an eclectic group of stand-up stars taking the stage including Sarah Silverman (THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM), David Cross (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) and Bob Odenkirk (MR. SHOW, TIM AND ERIC AWESOME SHOW, GREAT JOB!), the results are unpredictable and screamingly funny.

Alternating between performance footage and other aspects of life on the road, the humour in THE COMEDIANS OF COMEDY: LIVE AT THE TROUBADOUR is as diverse as the comics:

Patton Oswalt:
“My nerdiness is now getting in the way of my geekiness, that’s how pathetic my life has become.  I was thinking the other day what would I do with a time machine, would I watch the fall or the birth of a great civilization or find out one of the great mysteries, like who was Jack the Ripper?…. No, if I’m really honest with myself, the first thing I would do with a time machine is go back to 1993, the summer of ’93, and kill George Lucas with a shovel….. and stop him from making the prequels.”

Zach Galifianakis:
“I was at the drycleaners today picking up my kabbalah bracelet, trying to think what I was going to talk aboot…“about”…sorry, I’ve been in Canada opening up for Miles Davis…. “Kilometres” Davis.”

Maria Bamford:
“You know when you feel like you’ve been successful in life and then you go back to your hometown and you meet up with your arch enemy from high school: Christy Coombs at Target and you realize nothing has changed.
Christy: “So I saw you on TV the other day, and it’s just like high school, you’re not funny, you’re just weird… press debit or credit?”
Maria: “Booyah! But she gets the health benefits so she wins.”

Brian Posehn:
“I have never done a sex scene in a movie. I have done a bunch of movies, but no sex scenes. I don’t think I ever will and if I did it would be in a horror movie. And I wouldn’t be the one having the sex, it would be some hot teenaged couple getting it on and I would be over in the corner as the creepy janitor or the in-bred redneck hotel owner climbing through the window. They’re getting it on, hot teen style and I’m over in the corner saying “hehehe, get that shit. Get that shit, boy.” And the dudes going to be like “what the fuck?” At which point I hit him over the head with a shovel. That would be my sex scene.”

Saturday, June 13 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT

After enslavement and near extermination by an alien race in the year 3000, humanity begins to fight back. Stars John Travolta, Barry Pepper and Forest Whitaker.

On Saturday, June 13, at 7 p.m. (7:30 p.m. NT), American Savannah takes viewers to the world of a long-standing obsession: the perfect lawn. The pursuit of the perfect lawn is a booming industry, where agribusiness meets home improvement. The highly manicured lawn, so central to popular culture, has become entrenched within the American dream and has become an easily recognized North American status symbol. Out of this fascination with lawn care, has sprouted lawnmower racing and American Savannah takes viewers on a hilarious journey that includes this new sport which allows men to marry two of their favourite activities, lawn maintenance and competitive racing.

Lawns that are up to golf course or ballpark standards are still very much a North American status symbol. David Mellor, groundskeeper at Boston’s Fenway Park, showcases his creative mowing patterns for the documentary, demonstrating the possibility of bringing Fenway Park perfection to your own backyard.

Directed by Jean-Francois Méan and Ian Lagarde, American Savannah proves that no matter what the water shortages may be, green sod carpets are still sprouting up all around us. Both a psychoanalytic and environmental documentary, American Savannah will have viewers questioning the look of their lawn and that of their neighbours.

Senior Producers for The Nature of Things are F.M. Morrison and Caroline Underwood, Executive Producer, Michael Allder

EbonieEbonie Gets Washed Away on Tonight’s Episode CTV’s CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL

  • Catch encore presentations of the first episode on Star!/FT, MTV, and ‘A’
  • The next episode of CNTM airs on Tuesday, June 16 at 8 p.m. ET

A trip home and a revived spirit wasn’t enough to keep Ebonie, 22 from Quebec, in the competition this week. She was the third contestant sent packing on CTV’s CANADA’s NEXT TOP MODEL. Encore presentations of Episode 3 air on Star! and FashionTelevisionChannel, Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET; on MTV, Thursday at 10 p.m. ET; and a special Sunday night catch-up broadcast airs on ‘A’ at 10 p.m. ET. The drama ramps up when Episode 4 of CANADA’S NEXT TOP MODEL’s premieres Tuesday, June 16 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV (visit www.CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times). One of the contenders can’t take the constant pace of the competition and crashes under the intense pressure.

This week the girls tested their modelling skills in extreme elements. First up was a challenge where the models in training were encouraged to cover themselves in berries, beets, and chocolate to illustrate the natural colour influences of Cover Girl’s Outlast Lipstain. Linsay from Edmonton made messy pretty. She took home the challenge and an extra 50 frames at the week’s photo shoot.

The girls had very little time to clean up their smudged looks after the shoot. In just 30 minutes they were off to the Bahamas – CNTM’s first-ever foray out of the country. Excitement turned quickly to tears for Maryam when she learned that she had to stay in Toronto because she didn’t have a passport.

On Rose Island in the sun-soaked Bahamas, the girls were knee-deep in the ocean and heartbreak at the emotional “castaway bride” shoot, where they modelled Ines DiSanto wedding dresses. But the gorgeous sun and sand could only distract them for so long. The worry of who was going home next weighed on each of them while they were away.

At a teary elimination, the girls thought that Maryam’s poor planning gave her a disadvantage, but her at-home photo shoot wowed the judges and kept her in the running for another week. Host Jay Manuel and the judges – FASHIONTELEVISION’s Jeanne Beker, supermodel Yasmin Warsame, Montreal native and A-List photographer Mike Ruiz, and guest judge Helen Pak from Saatchi & Saatchi Canada, a national advertising firm (who oversaw the Cover Girl challenge) – found Ebonie’s photo weak for the third week in a row and sent her packing. Now seven girls vie for a modeling contract with Elmer Olsen Model Management, an editorial spread in FASHION Magazine and a $100,000 beauty contract from P&G Beauty: makers of Cover Girl, Olay, Crest Whitestrips and Perfect 10 by Nice ‘n Easy.

The midway point is upon us and in Episode 4 (Tuesday, June 16 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV), the girls get a lesson in personal charisma from a surprise Canadian supermodel. Meanwhile, the drama ramps up as one of the contenders crashes under the intense pressure of the competition. After all of their training the one who doesn’t succeed in standing out gets booted out. The remaining competitors are left wondering who’ll be next. At this stage in the competition, it’s still anyone’s game.

Premieres Thursday, June 11 at 10pm ET/PT (9pm CT, 8pm MT)

Based on the wildly successful series from Emmy award winning producer Dick Wolf, Law and Order UK  comes to Canada! Law and Order UK follows Detective Ronnie Brooks (Bradly Walsh, Coronation Street) and partner Detective Matt Devlin (Jamie Bamber, Battlestar Galactica) as they solve some of the most gruesome crimes committed in Great Britain.

When I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here made its big debut on NBC (Much Music in Canada) 3 weeks ago, ratings were sky high at 4.6 million viewers for the premier episode alone. But it seems that viewers were not tuning in for contestants like Janice Dickenson or Stephen Baldwin, at least not according to this week’s ratings which have dropped 28% this week since drama inducing Heidi [Montag] and Spencer Pratt.

If you didn’t guess it already, I think it’s been made clear by this week’s ratings that viewers aren’t tuning into I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here to watch D-list celebrities battle it out in support of a worthy cause; they were watching simply for the drama brought by Heidi and Spencer. And if you watched, you know that they made it worth your while, with multiple attempts to escape from the jungle camp, fights with other contestants, declarations for devout love for Jesus, and an illness that would make them leave the jungle once and for all (and I’d bet we haven’t heard the end of that).

Honestly? I can attest for the reduction in viewers; because I’m not tuning in regularly either…I’ll catch the reruns or watch the show when not much else is happening. Let’s face it, without the drama, what’s this show got to offer us?
