E1 Entertainment, 990 Multi Media Entertainment Company and Jonsworth Productions Inc. Announce Start of Production on CTV/CBS Original Canadian drama series, THE BRIDGE

  • Guest Directors include Helen Shaver and Stuart Margolin
  • Five-time Gemini Award winner Alan Di Fiore heads writing team

E1 Entertainment, 990 Multi Media Entertainment Company and Jonsworth Productions, in association with CTV and CBS Paramount Network Television announce that principal photography is underway on the original Canadian drama series, The Bridge.

Originally commissioned as a two-hour movie of the week and back-door pilot by CTV, 11 episodes will be shot on location in and around Toronto until August 12 to round out the first season. This start of production follows February’s (2009) joint announcement by CTV and CBS of the deal to broadcast The Bridge in the United States. The Bridge is the third series from E1 Entertainment to be picked up by a high-profile U.S. network in the last 18 months, and the first for 990 Multi Media Entertainment Company. The CBS deal also marks the third Canadian drama series from CTV to be picked up by a major U.S. network in the last 20 months.

Informed by the insights of veteran insider and outspoken former Toronto police union head Craig Bromell, The Bridge reveals the struggle of street cops who not only battle criminals, but also their own bosses in order to protect society and, ultimately, themselves. The series will take viewers beyond the blue line, offering a glimpse of the police, power and politics that unfold behind the scenes.

The Bridge follows fictional character Frank Leo (played by Aaron Douglas, Battlestar Galactica) and his climb from street cop to union head where he begins his quest to clean up the force. But the old boys network running the police force, and the city’s self-serving politicians, won’t sit idly by while a former street cop makes up his own rules.

The Bridge stars Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica; Smallville) as outspoken union head Frank Leo; Paul Popowich (Angela’s Eyes; I Me Wed) as Frank’s partner and confidante Tommy Dunn; Gemini Award nominee Inga Cadranel (Rent-a-Goalie; M.V.P.) as Jill, the free-spirited detective on the force; Genadijs Dolganovs (Max Payne; Jeff Ltd.) as Jill’s partner, Alex Volkolev; Frank Cassini (Vice; Intelligence) as Staff Sergeant Bernie Kantor; Theresa Joy (All the Good Ones are Married; Sixty Days) as the feisty tomboy Police Constable, Billy; Ona Grauer (Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis) as the beautiful, passionate prosecutor, Abby St. James; Michael Murphy (Away From Her; X-Men: The Last Stand) as Chief of Police and political animal, Ed Wycoff, and two-time Emmy Award Winner Stuart Margolin (The Rockford Files, Tom Stone) as Frank’s father, Vic Leo.

Slated to direct the series are Gemini Award winners John Fawcett (Da Vinci’s Inquest) and Holly Dale (Durham County); Daytime Emmy Award winner Paul Kaufman (Run the Wild Fields); Genie and Gemini Award winner Helen Shaver (We All Fall Down/Just Cause) and two-time Emmy Award winner Stuart Margolin (Rockford Files). Heading up the writing team is five-time Gemini Award winner and six-time nominee, Alan Di Fiore (Da Vinci’s Inquest, The Life).

When a curmudgeon takes on stand up the results can be hysterical and no one does it better than comedian Jeremy Hotz.  Hot off a successful tour of Western Canada, Hotz is back in JEREMY HOTZ –WHAT A MISERABLE SHOW THIS IS premiering Saturday, April 25 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. If once is not enough, help yourself to a second dose of Hotz in the encore presentation Monday, April 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Part of The Comedy Network’s SATURDAY NIGHT STAND-UP series, JEREMY HOTZ –WHAT A MISERABLE SHOW THIS IS will also be available uncensored and on demand at thecomedynetwork.ca.

Already a legend on the Canadian comedy scene, Hotz has been a stand-out performer at seven Just For Laughs Festivals and headlined the Just For Laughs Canadian Tour in 2005. Filmed during his live show at the 2008 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, JEREMY HOTZ – WHAT A MISERABLE SHOW THIS IS showcases Hotz at his blundering best.

Riffing on everything from construction sites to the feeding habits of goldfish, Hotz makes astute observations resulting in a hilariously fresh take on everyday life.  Here’s Jeremy on…

Goldfish: here’s the most exciting thing that happens in a fish aquarium. A fish will be swimming this way, and then a piece of shit from another fish will float down, the fish will see it, eat it, realize it’s shit, and then spit it out.  It keeps swimming this way, but then it will turn around and eat it again!  It the same shit from two seconds ago!  No wonder you’re in a tank!

Canada versus the U.S.: we’re the same, but different.  They [U.S.] try to do the same things we do, like we both celebrate Thanksgiving, but they do it on a different day. Why, ‘cause they’re assholes!

UPS: I never understood UPS, you dress them in brown and it looks like a human piece of shit walking up.  Just leave the package on the doorstep; we’ve got kids in the house!

With appearances on THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN and THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO, Hotz is a fan favorite across Canada and the U.S. He recently starred in Comedy Central’s THE JEREMY HOTZ SPECIAL, and has guest starred in MTV’S HALF HOUR COMEDY HOUR. The recipient of a Gemini Award for Best Performance in a Comedy Show or Series for his work in the series NEWSROOM on the CBC, Hotz also received the Dave Broadfoot comic genius award at the 2008 Canadian Comedy Awards. In addition to his stand-up, Hotz was a staff writer on Comedy Central’s critically acclaimed THE JON STEWART SHOW.

Karen (Daphne Zuniga, ONE TREE HILL) was born to a wealthy family and has never quite found her way out from under the wings of her overprotective parents. Karen is seeing an analyst, but she’s also having an affair with him — which does not make her unusual among his female patients. When her psychiatrist/lover is killed after one of her appointments, Karen becomes the police’s prime suspect. She decides to play with the truth and tells the police that she can no longer remember what happened that day. On the advice of her lawyer, Karen begins working with another psychiatrist, Dr. Peter Rexler (Jack Wagner, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL), in hope that he can help recover the memories from her last meeting with the doctor. But Karen’s forgetful act works all too well when Peter, unable to get to the bottom of her repressed memories, has her institutionalized.
