Ready, set, spell! Global Television proudly returns as the exclusive broadcaster of the 2009 Canwest Canspell National Spelling Bee Finals.

On Saturday, April 18th –  8pm ET/PT Ottawa heats up as Colin Mochrie (Are You Smarter Than a Canadian 5th Grader?) hosts this year’s spelling finals.  ET Canada’s Rick Campanelli co-hosts the event and will be joined by colour analyst, Finola Hackett, the two-time Canadian Champ and 2006 runner-up in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“Year after year, the drama of the spelling finals has captured our audiences nationwide, and this year will be no exception,” said Christine Shipton, SVP Drama and Factual Content, Canwest Broadcasting. “It’s absolutely incredible to see the poise and intellect reflected in these young spellers. The contenders keep getting stronger, and we’re extremely proud and excited to continue our unwavering support.”

Approximately 1700 schools registered to take part in the Canspell program for 2009, engaging a quarter million students from coast-to-coast.  All ten provinces are represented at the national event which sees 22 young spellers competing for the Canadian title in Ottawa.  These 22 top spellers will additionally proceed to the international competition, the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. during Bee Week in May of this year.

Canwest is joined by presenting and lead sponsor Canada Post, who covered all school registration fees associated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  Canwest Canspell is affiliated with the renowned Scripps event so that Canadian spellers can compete on the international stage each spring.
